Barbara Hinderlong-Elifritz has allegedly obtained a lawyer to represent her family following the shooting death of her husband, John Elifritz, by Portland police on Saturday.

This information was relayed to the Mercury by a person close to the family who has asked to remain anonymous. On a phone call, Hinderlong-Elifritz confirmed to the Mercury that this person was allowed to speak for her. She will no longer speak to police officers or the media.

Both Hinderlong-Elifritz and her 12-year-old daughter, Stormy, will be represented by this lawyer going forward. The source won’t comment if this means Hinderlong-Elifritz plans on filing a case against the Portland Police Bureau for her husband’s death.

  1. “Obtained” a lawyer? I believe the correct term is “retained” a lawyer. Wouldn’t nit-pick unless I have found the Merc’s reporting on the shooting to involve a great deal of cherry-picking of witness statements. Mr, Elifritz was someone with a history of putting the community at risk and btw a white supremacist. He committed suicide by cop. The cops fired when he tried to stab a police dog. Should they have let him stab the dog first and then waited to see if he tried to stab a person? Maybe, but the cops had to make a split second decision. You aren’t going to get perfection.
