A Portland man shot by police last month has been indicted by a Multnomah Grand Jury on multiple charges, according to a news release.
Michael Shawn Harrison, 48, is charged with two counts of menacing and one count each of first-degree burglary and unlawful use of a weapon.
READ THE REST AFTER THE JUMP
Harrison was allegedly armed with a steak knife when he charged at Portland Police Officer Raelynn McKay and Sergeant Martin Padilla on May 17 near the 3900 block of SE 14th Ave. Padilla shot a less-lethal round and McKay fired her handgun at Harrison. The news release doesn’t specify how many times Harrison was shot.
The shooting occurred after officers responded to a 911 call claiming a bleeding man had exited a home with a steak knife. Shortly after that call, a separate female caller reported that a bloody man armed with a knife had broken into her home in the 1500 block of SE Boise St. The woman told dispatchers that she was hiding in the basement with her two kids. The woman later told investigators that when Harrison saw her he asked, “Are the children home?” (Creeeeeeepy!)
The news release states that Harrison exited the home still carrying a knifeโwhich investigators determined later was a different knife than he initially hadโand charged at cops staged across the street. The officers fired and Harrison allegedly kept running, right between Padilla and McKay, and “slammed into the side of a house.”
The officers subdued Harrison and a medical team already on scene administered first aid before transporting him to a hospital. Harrison was treated and released into police custody, where he’s been since.
Harrison was “upset over a pending divorce,” the news release states.
No officers were injured in the incident.
