Sorry, going to my first (and only) Blazers game tonight! Bad timing, gang.
Go Blazers!
Hey anarchists! Look, this is how you get institutional buy-in. Don’t fight outside City Hall. Fight inside City Hall.
SHHH! Don’t tell the anarchists about the flyer. They’ll just turn that cool art into a stencil.
More likely they’ll just deface Albina Ministries’ church with the logo using shitty graffiti art, or some other randomly stupid act of “violence against property” to get their completely misguided point across.
They are totally high-fiving.
Come on Jack, don’t be so reactionary. Very little damage was done in the protest Monday and calling their point ‘completely misguided’ is a slap in the face of Campbell, Chasse, and others who have been wronged by the PPD. You should have come down from your condo and brought another rational voice to the crowd, you would not have been as alone as you seem to think.
I went to the protest Monday and plan to go to this event tonight. I am starting to think that any real change will likely come from this more moderate group, but that doesn’t mean there is no place for other voices. Many of the same arguments against Monday’s protest could have been straight out of the OregonLive comments years ago against the gulf war demonstrations.
Wait, so we’re supposed to be OK with the fact that “very little damage” was done during these protests? How much damage do you think will be done at tonight’s meeting? I’m guessing zero. Wanna know why? Because these people are trying to affect change the right way (i.e. by not throwing temper tantrums derived from unused angst left over from step-dad).
I’m not nearly as far away from these “anarchists” as you might think.
I’m just older, wiser, and more capable of seeing its farce. If you really are “one of the rational voices” in this crowd, you’ll understand that and help the crowd to more positive means of getting what we all want as a people (which isn’t anarchy, homey).
And by the way, the only thing that would’ve gotten me “down from my condo” would’ve been blatant misuse of force by the PPB.
But then we wouldn’t be having this conversation right now.
So were the gulf war demonstrations ‘temper tantrums’ as well? Is there ever a reason to protest or should we only do meetings?
No, tth. They were not. I have zero complaints with protests. Just unnecessary violence and destruction of property. We’re all better than that. This isn’t Compton, nor is it Detroit, nor is it the Bronx. It’s Portland.
Well Monday was a protest, not a riot, and moreover the black bloc types were at the gulf war protests as well. I think people on Blogtown got tricked into thinking the crowd Monday would be exclusively ‘anarchists’ by a single posting on PortlandIndymedia. I like to poke fun at the crust punks as much as the next 30 something guy, but that doesn’t mean I will avoid every protest where they might show. Again, there was very little damage to property done by a handful of people, I just don’t think it is fair for you to paint with such a broad brush.
Like the saying goes, “You are who you associate with.”
And as I said above, the only way I was getting involved Monday night was if I witnessed an act of injustice coming from the cops. That didn’t happen (at least nothing I witnessed, and I was watching pretty effing intently), so I stayed out of it.
Based on my associations I guess I am going to go from being an anarchist crust punk to an elderly minister in three short days. ๐
HAHAHA
Get in where you fit in. I think you’ll find tonight’s meeting much more your speed if you’re truly that interested in getting something done.
