Here at the Mercury, we were thinking it was pretty risky for the police union to have all those t-shirts and signs printed up for the rally yesterday with the “I am Chris Humphreys” slogan so blatantly plastered across them. What might happen, we wondered, if those signs and t-shirts got into the wrong hands? Which is where the idea for the “I am Chris Humphreys” Photosho-mpetitionTM came along. Here’s a sample submission by the Mercury‘s own art director, Justin “Scrappers” Morrison:

Easy to beat, right? So: Send your jpegs, png’s and gifs to news@portlandmercury.com, and the best one in the bag by Friday lunchtime wins a 12-year-old-sized “I am Chris Humphreys” t-shirt, as given to yours truly midway through the march, yesterday:

  1. This is downright embarrassing. Matt has no business “reporting” on this story to begin with given his obvious conflict of interest. If he’s going to ignore the conflict, he shouldn’t descend to this almost pre-teen level.

  2. Your rule of thumb broke on this one. Your post, and particularly the image, was puerile.

You’ve lost distance from this story. There’s no hint of objectivity in what you write about the issue, and you’ve become monochromatic. Your cops are all bad; brutish thugs waiting to pounce. You’ve arrayed heroes and victims on the other side of the issue, and unstintingly lavish praise on both.

Take the two rallies, for example. I saw both rallies, and listened to the speeches. What you wrote simply wasn’t representative of what occurred.

This is a serious story, and yet you treat it only with advocacy and snarkiness. I have no clue what the aim is. Sell a movie or a book? It’s certainly not to inform the public.

  3. It would be amusing if we had two very important public service unions suddenly refuse to work because of these incidents.

  4. The first photo is excellent, if slightly nauseating, and could win handily.

The second, however, I find a bit mystifying: is Humphreys smallish and balding? Does he look like a sad funeral director?

    Please explain.

  5. Hey username FIRE MATT DAVIS NOW! – How are getting that this is trying to be a news piece? It’s a photoshop contest, for chrissakes. You are dumb.
