Good morning, Portland! Back to work and back to the cold, harsh reality of our news cycle. Today's headlines are especially bleak (like the weather):

Shooting in TX: A man killed two people Sunday during a church service in the town of White Settlement, Texas. Members of the congregation fired back, fatally shooting him. The church minister thanked God and the government for allowing Americans the "opportunity to protect ourselves." (Again: Three people are dead.)

Stabbing in NY: A man with a long knife injured five Orthodox Jews after barging into a New York rabbi's house during a Hanukkah celebration and slashing at the crowd. This is only the latest act of domestic terrorism against Jewish Americans.

Say Her Name: Julie Berman, a leader in Toronto's trans community who advocated for trans murder victims was murdered last week.

Retaliator-in-Chief: Donald Trump retweeted a post on Twitter sharing the name of the alleged whistleblower whose complaint prompted the impeachment inquiry. He deleted it afterwards—or maybe Twitter did? Does it matter?

Another Bridge to Cross: US Rep. John Lewis, a leader in the civil rights movement (and voice of clarity in the Capitol), has been diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer. “I have decided to do what I know to do and do what I have always done: I am going to fight it and keep fighting for the beloved community,” Lewis told the New York Times. “We still have many bridges to cross.”

Not Fucking Around: In the midst of a national measles crisis, Seattle Public Schools are requiring all students be vaccinated by January 8, 2020—or don't bother returning to school. They'll be marked absent until they've been immunized.

A Christmas Miracle: The Oregonian is scrapping the steaming landfill of vile bigotry it calls its online comment section!

Embedded: A car crashed into Pip’s Original Doughnuts early Sunday morning. Per Pip's peeved owner: “They crossed over the oncoming traffic lane and went up onto the sidewalk, in the process destroying the Trimet bus stop, a 600-pound heavy timber planter, a concrete and steel bench and then embedding the front end of their car in the east-most corner of the shop.”
