Will you be able to legally buy pot in October? No saying. Gov. Kate Brown, who just offered a post-session sit-down with every Portland TV station, is being cagey as to whether or not she’ll sign SB 460, which would allow medical dispensaries to sell to recreational customers beginning Oct. 1. The bill’s been reported on by some outlets as if it’s already signed, but people watching the situation have said it could lead to conflicts with the feds’ tenuous permissions around legal pot. The governor’s office has repeatedly (though politely) refused to answer the Mercury‘s questions about Brown’s take on the legislation.
One thing Brown did sign? A bill that’s supposed to crack down on profiling by police—by making it easier to report profiling incidents, requiring police departments to enact formal bans, and giving money to PSU researchers. It will be very interesting to see whether this leads to meaningful consequences, because of course profiling happens all the time.
Speaking of police abuse: New York City settled with the family of Eric Garner—he of the tragic “I can’t breathe” pleas when cops were choking him out for allegedly selling cigarettes—for $5.9 million. That doesn’t mean anyone’s admitting fault, though, everybody.
High Times is stumped. The magazine can NOT find a place in Portland to host its Cannabis Cup, because, it says, every suitable space has a liquor license, which would preclude legally using pot. (Not true.)
Railroads: Refusing to sign accords that would bring Portland’s crucial flood levies up to national standards. Railroads.
Next time you’re grumbling to yourself about how that homeless guy in the doorway squandered and lazed his life away, consider the story of Alfred Postell, the brilliant and fastidious lawyer who graduated Harvard law with Chief Justice John Roberts—and lost everything to his mental illness.
A 16-year-old girl who was on a tiny plane flying from Montana to Washington walked two days through dense wilderness after it crashed. That’s crazy.
Sure, terrible Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker announced he’d be running for president yesterday. But the more salient proclamation was the AFL-CIO’s terse and perfect response.
Damn it… but he was JUST….. Notorious Mexican drug kingpin El Chapo broke out again, y’all. This time from Mexico’s “most secure” prison. Just down through a hole in the shower and into his very own special tunnel. Come on, Mexico.
And we’ve finally got a deal! President Obama announced this morning there’s a plan for limiting Iran’s nuclear capabilities over the next decade, after almost two years of negotiations. Israel is not pleased.
It’s going to be a lovely Bastille Day.

You’ve all got a great deal to learn about hip hop.

Oregon really needs its’ own version of Scott Walker.
Sad to say, but true.
Israel is not pleased? Wha?!
