Remember that 16-year-old Roosevelt High School football player who police pummeled and tased in September? And how we all watched it on video? Turns out, Thai Gurule did nothing wrong, and several cops were not “credible” on the stand in an attempt to convict him of resising arrest and assaulting police officers. That’s the dramatic verdict reached yesterday by Multnomah County Circuit Judge Diana Stewart. It’s good news! And also frightening that Gurule’s innocence—in the face of incriminating police testimony—was only determined because of shaky footage.
The O has paired its coverage of the verdict with a primer on what to do if you’re stopped by Portland police.
State Sen. Chip Shields, of Portland, will pull back a bill he slipped in, by asking a fellow lawmaker to introduce it for him. The legislation, first reported by Willamette Week, could have meant big benefits for Shields’ family business.
“Go big or go home,” Mayor Charlie Hales said yesterday, on the way to convincing his City Council colleagues to clear the way for a final vote on major changes to Portland’s urban renewal landscape. That involves eliminating some Urban Renewal Areas—special swaths of the city taken off the regular tax rolls so any revenue can be reinvested within their bounds—shrinking others, and increasing two. And that final vote on March 25? It’s not likely to be harmonious. Commissioner Amanda Fritz has voiced major qualms with some of these changes.
RIP Michael Graves, who gave us the splendor of the Portland Building.
Oregon’s top federal prosecutor, US Attorney Amanda Marshall, has left the job, for now, while she handles unspecified health issues. Feel better!
Former Gov. John Kitzhaber and Hillary Clinton have EVEN MORE in common than you might think.
Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is guilty as hell his attorney says. Her only hope: to save him from the death penalty.
You ready to see presidential contenders tear each other limb from limb—that every-four-year gladiatorial glory upon which our nation was founded? It’s coming closer every day. Republicans are already practically there.
Protests in Ferguson were peaceful and brief last night, the day after two officers were shot.
I’m hearing so many people harsh daylight saving time these days, and I don’t get it. It should always be light, later. How is this not universally accepted? Today’s sunset? 7:13 pm, and only getting later. We’ve won!

The most notable thing about President Obama’s appearance on Jimmy Kimmel last night? That the show was able to find anti-Obama tweets that were this intelligent.

“It should always be light, later. How is this not universally accepted?”
Let me fill you in, Dirk. Take one part photodermatitis, two parts generalized anxiety disorder, shake vigorously until itchy and paranoid. Mixed correctly, you should feel like a cross between Quasimodo and Travis Bickle whenever the big scary outside isn’t dark enough to scuttle out and try to feel like a goddamn human.
Wow, I should probably go back into therapy.
Sounds like Sen Shields should be ousted. I wonder what other shady deals he’s pulled? I’ll bet this is not the first one.
It’s Daylight Saving Time. Not Savings.
Look it up.
FINE, MATT. FIXED.
The guy that designed the portland building and the idiot politicians that ruined it- gross. It’s by far the ugliest building anywhere in Oregon
