Stay up to date on Portland news and politics. Looking for fun? Here are the best Things to Do in Portland today.

Good morning, Portland! Here’s what you need to know to start your week off right.
Light Violence in Downtown Portland: Members of alt-right group Patriot Prayer clashed with local antifa groups in downtown Portland yesterday, resulting in a number of fistfights, childish taunts, and arrests. Both sides claimed “victory” over the loosely-defined protest, because that’s the point.
Meanwhile, in Texas: Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley had police called on him after requesting entering into a federal immigrant detention center holding undocumented children.
Discrimination Vote Delayed: The Supreme Court avoided making a major decision about business owners’ right to turn away LGBT customers on the basis of religious freedom this morning. Instead, the court’s majority voted that a Colorado wedding cake baker did not get a fair hearing in a lower court, avoiding the real reasoning behind the complaint .
Today in ‘Surprising No One…’: According to a United Nations report, Trump’s leadership is making life worse for America’s poor. In brief: “The policies pursued over the past year seem deliberately designed to remove basic protections from the poorest, punish those who are not in employment and make even basic health care into a privilege to be earned, rather than a right of citizenship.”
And That’s Why You Never Bring a Gun to a Dance-Off: While showing off his sick dance moves at a club, an off-duty FBI agent dropped his gun. When he tried to pick it up, he accidentally shot someone in the leg.
Volcano News: Guatemala’s Fuego volcano has erupted, killing at least 25 residents and injuring dozens with its fast-flowing lava and ashy clouds. Meanwhile, Hawaii’s still-flowing Kilauea volcano was jostled by a earthquake this weekend, which sent a 8,000-foot ash plume into the air.
Shots Fired: A woman was arrested yesterday for firing a pellet gun near San Diego’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon route, temporarily throwing the race off course. The only person injured was a police offer, who evidently shot himself while trying to track down and arrest the suspect.
Longread of the Week: Check out this fantastic series by Pamela Coloff about a man suspiciously charged with killing his wife in the late 1980s, in small town Texas. Top-shelf true crime writing.
Oregon Culinary Institute Mourns: We still don’t know why an instructor at the Oregon Culinary Institute was found shot to death Saturday morning. Police have ruled Chef Daniel Trophy’s death a homicide—but have yet to identify a suspect. Students will hold a candlelight vigil for the beloved teacher tonight.
I’ll leave you with a video of Brophy teaching students how to mushroom hunt:

The murdered chef’s name is Brophy, not Trophy.
