The legislature’s joint committee on pot laws is in danger of being rent asunder, the O reports, after they failed to agree on how cities should be able to opt out of hosting medical pot dispensaries.
Dozens of protestors showed up to that “super-legal slowdown” at SE 26th and Powell last night, an action meant to draw attention to the need for safety improvements on Powell. ODOT, which controls Powell, showed up, too, telling demonstrators that there were plans… for 2017. Also: No pity for angry drivers. If they’d read any Portland media source yesterday they’d have known to plan another route.
The gun check loophole is closed. It’s not even that big a deal, but the provision signed by Gov. Kate Brown yesterday took years of legislative fighting. It also inspired kudos the President Obama when he swung by last week, though you can bet the president is readied with a ripped-from-the-headlines compliment at practically any function he attends.
A Portland motorist who chased the drunk driver who hit him is now staring down two lawsuits. That fleeing drunk killed a guy.
The most frustrating bigots in the news today? Texas lawmakers. AGAIN. Lone Star State Republicans know that same-sex marriage will soon be legal, so they’re pushing a bill to ban county clerks from issuing marriage licenses to gay couples, simply to tie the whole thing up for longer. My god.
“We’re obviously hearing of buildings destroyed, buildings collapsed, buildings falling, we’re hearing about casualties, but the numbers are not known yet.” Another earthquake has rocked Nepal.
If you want to know what those two shabby journalists are arguing about in the corner, odds are it has something to do with the Seymour Hersh piece published in the London Review of Books on Sunday. It’s super-long and uses largely anonymous sources to paint a vastly different picture of Osama Bin Laden’s killing than we’ve been given. Some sites claim Hersh—a legendary investigative reporter—is seeing figments in his dotage. Others are working to confirm the account. Others are saying some of it’s old hat.
Verizon wants to buy America Online for some reason? Actually, for several reasons, including AOL’s ownership of The Huffington Post, and the company’s 2.2 million dial-up subscribers. That’s 2.2 million souls in A New Hope t-shirts, a/s/l-ing into eternity.
A wild boar? In a shopping mall?

This is actually pretty chill.

“Also: No pity for angry drivers. If they’d read any Portland media source yesterday they’d have known to plan another route.”
Some people actually work while they’re at work. Crazy, I know.
