If you missed it, raucous and infuriated demonstrators shut down a Multnomah County Commission meeting yesterday, demanding commissioners enact a rent freeze and end no-cause evictions. The demonstrators say there’s space under state law to do so. The county disagrees. Whatever the case, it looks like these kinds of demonstrations might crop up more, as activists say changes in the wake of Portland’s housing state of emergency declaration have been too incremental.
The first press conference about increased shootings came early this year, along with this spate of sunshine. Top law enforcement officials, the mayor, and concerned North Portland residents collected in Peninsula Park yesterday to make a familiar plea: Put the guns away.
Former Gov. John Kitzhaber continues his slow tip-toe back into the public consciousness. Remember when we caught up with the ex-gov visiting Right 2 Dream Too? Now he’s released a Facebook video sort of re-introducing himself to Oregonians. And he wants to make something clear. He’s NOT guilty. Of anything.
Sad news out of Austin, where a Portland native was found murdered on the campus of the University of Texas. Haruka Weiser was a freshman, and had graduated from a Beaverton school last year. A 17-year-old has been arrested in connection with the crime.
The Pope wants the Catholic Church to be a lot more inclusive. Still doesn’t think same-sex marriage is worth a damn.
As it faces all sorts of allegations of shadiness, pet rental outfit Hannah the Pet Society has pretty much ceased renting out new pets. It says that has nothing to do with investigations and lawsuits. People just don’t need to rent pets as much, these days!
Oregon’s legal weed system hasn’t done any favors to pot-slinging neighbors just across the river in Washington. Sales are down. Sharply. As we all knew they would be.
Portland’s parks department made East Portland puke. Well, at least one resident who lives near a park where city workers dumped noxious mulch.
Bill Clinton took the bait, and started verbally sparring with Black Lives Matter protestors while campaigning for his wife yesterday. They were angry over a crime bill Clinton passed in office.
Over on the Republican side of things? The Koch money machine has pretty much given up on a presidential contest it once savored, says the Guardian. Looking into Senate races these days.
We’re on a roll, Portland!
