GOOD MORNING, BLOGTOWN! If you took it there, first of all let me say, I am not the one to sit around and be played. LET’S GO TO PRESS.

The Oregonian is apparently buying in to the entitled views of some downtown business owners that homeless people are ruining Portland. Today they’ve printed a click-baity and unsubtle poll that gives readers only two options to the question “do you feel safe in downtown?”: #DowntownPDXisSafe or #DowntownPDXisScary. HEY O, YOU CAN DO MUCH, MUCH BETTER.

The Blazers took down the Spurs in a squeaker of a game, 111-110.

The Trump administration is off to a despicable start this week by ruling that 200,000 Salvadorans who’ve been in the US for a decade are going to be kicked out of the country.

Steve Bannon apologized for the remarks he made in the supposedly “fake” book about Trump written by Michael Wolff, as the president’s staff (led by dead-eyed automoton Stephen Miller) took the offensive.

As bad as Wolff’s book makes Trump look, the president doesn’t help his case by being one of the laziest presidents ever, according to this report.

Before correcting it, “stable genius” Trump wrote on Twitter that his was a “consensual presidency.” The internet had some fun with that.

A small electrical fire broke out on top of Trump Tower this morning, but it was quickly extinguished.

The #MeToo and Time’s Up movements took center stage at last night’s Golden Globes where participants wore all black to protest sexual harassment and assault, women-led films and shows took home many of the awards, and Oprah Winfrey gave a rousing (and should I say Obama-ian style?) speech. The internet immediately voted her as our next president of the United States.

Now let’s check the WEATHER: Mostly cloudy today with light rain tonight and a high of 47.

And finally, you should really take a few minutes and check out Oprah Winfrey’s speech at the Golden Globes. You gotta admit it’s presidential!

Bang bang, choo-choo train, let me see you shake that thang. Wm. Steven Humphrey is the editor-in-chief of the Portland Mercury and has held the job since 2000. (So don’t get any funny ideas.)

  1. Oprah’s speech was certainly inspiring, and there’s no question she’s done a lot to improve many people’s lives, but we don’t need another billionaire media star as president, no matter how philanthropic they are. How about someone who isn’t in the 0.01% and has broad and deep policy knowledge and wasn’t a cheerleader for the neo-liberal sellout engineered by the last two Democratic administrations?

  2. Another thing: you don’t have to be a total fascist dick to think downtown looks like shit right now. I don’t feel threatened there, but man do we look like a city that can’t take care of itself.
We look like a city that can’t come up with a comprehensive plan for homelessness, and as the economy tips further over into the shitter, it’s gonna get worse. That’s not the fault of the homeless, by the by. It’s the city.
However, just to act like nothing’s wrong? That’s just you being stupid, Merc.

  3. SO STEVE, WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THIS COMMENTARY ON YOUR WRITING THERE? DO YOU AGREE, DISAGREE? WHY DON’T YOU ENGAGE WITH THE PEOPLE YOU ARE OSTENSIBLY WRITING TO?
