Convinced Oregon’s insufficient road taxing structure needs a tweak? You can sign up for a new pilot system, where you’ll pay 1.5 cents for each mile you drive instead of the state’s 30-cent-per-gallon gas tax. And if your car gets more than 20 mpg, you’ll generously be paying more than everyone else. So thanks!
Bike deaths! A group called the Governors Highway Safety Association released an alarmist report yesterday howling about how fatal accidents among cyclists have increased in recent years. Then a web site called bikeportland.org punctured the hell out of it.
More disturbing details from the school shooting near Seattle last week. The 15-year-old killer texted his friends to meet him for lunch, then attacked.
What about Ebola? Well, we’ve got at least one person who’s probably not a risk under surveillance here in Oregon. And the second Texas nurse to contract the disease from a Liberian man is cured!
On the east coast, everyone’s mad at the governors of New York and New Jersey for briefly trying to mandate three-week quarantines for health workers who fight the disease in West Africa. And the CDC has weighed in, saying “not necessary.”
And in West Africa, our Ebola quailing looks very, very small, as officials wrestle with the notion that even the best efforts may not be enough to stanch the suffering.
ELECTION NEWS! We’re a week out from the most expensive mid-term election in history, and polls (still) suggest Republicans are in for a treat.
