Stay up to date on Portland news and politics. Looking for fun? Here are the best Things to Do in Portland today.
Good Morning, Portland! Much like the just-wrapped season of Bachelor In Paradise, I’m here, I’m queer, and I’m ready to stir up some drama!
Here are the headlines.
BREAKING NEWS: Powerful White Man Is Disappointing: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is apologizing for a newly surfaced photo of him in brownface, a deeply racist and ugly practice. The photo was taken when Trudeau was 29—a fully grown man by any metric—and attending an “Arabian Nights” costume gala. Yikes yikes yikes!

Sentenced: A man who made ominous threats against Mayor Ted Wheeler via Instagram last year has been sentenced to 14 months in prison for extortion. US Attorney for Oregon Billy Williams wrote that the sentence “is proportionate to the seriousness of the offense, and will serve as a deterrence to others who, like the defendant, use the internet to publicly broadcast threats.”
Not So Special After All: After a will-they-or-won’t-they roller coaster ride over the last couple weeks, Governor Kate Brown announced yesterday that she will not be convening a special session to “fix” a recent law that should significantly narrow Oregon’s use of the death penalty.
Low-Energy: TriMet’s goal is to have an entire non-diesel bus fleet by 2040—so why will a new SE Division bus project be powered by diesel buses? Oregonian transportation reporter Andrew Theen’s got the details.
Displaced by Dorian: About 4,000 Bahamians fled their homes after Hurricane Dorian struck, and many of them ended up in Florida. Now, these climate refugees (and make no mistake, they are climate refugees) face an uncertain future, as there’s no guarantee they’ll get to stay in the US.
