Mayor Sam Adams tweeted this afternoon that Occupy Portland really needs to nix the medical marijuana tent that they set up in Lownsdale Park:
We want to do our part to provide clear communication regarding the OccupyPortland protest. Recently, my team and I read some internet posts about OccupyPortland and medical use of marijuana in public places and parks. According the the Office of the City Attorney, under state law, a person authorized to possess marijuana for medical use is NOT allowed to do so in a public place or in public view. A public place means a place to which the general public has access and includes parks. So, even though a person may be authorized by state law to possess marijuana for medical use they are not allowed to do so anywhere in a public park. Not even out of view in a tent. We are enforcing all alcohol and drug laws. Related ORS 457.316(1)(b);
The late night hug tent is still okay, though.

:rolleyes:
This could get intense.
Did they try stuffing towels under the tent-flaps and/or burning Nag Champa?
C’mon! Dryer sheets in toilet paper tubes.
Well, here he is breaking the 140 character twitter limit. Hypocrite.
There must be a lot of glaucoma patients there. I walk by daily between 4:30 and 5 and every time it reminds me of a phish concert.
The mayor added, “Seriously guys, get some real shoes, cut your damn hair and try to not sound like one of those college kids that just came back from a year abroad. I’m trying to back you up here. Help a brother out.”
It’s clear state and city govts. needs to establish public medication stations and carve out an exception to the “public places” nonsense… which, when taken literally, prohibits someone who may be homeless from access to her/his medication. It’s clear we all have a right to medicate.
In fact take it a step further, as the Canadians have done, and create Safer Injection Sites; cuts overdose deaths dramatically and gets hardcore addicts in touch with health care and drug treatment options.
Occupy … is working and exposing the true nature of our stupid drug polices at every level… I’m not at all surprised those who are threatened by the truth would use the drug laws to try and stop this historic movement… revolution is messy and the drug laws are a hammer… after all that was the intent in the first place when Nixon declared the “War on Drugs,” in 1972 and used it against those of us out on the street protesting segregation and the Vietnam war…
