This is the first time I’ve ever heard “Mic check!” “Mic check!” “Mic check!” “Mic check!” and been filled with happiness—look how effective it can be in the right circumstance.

Good work, guys.

  1. Scott Walker is gonna get his, and the people of Wisconsin are gonna serve it cold, starting on the 15th… Actually, make that the 4th. Ironically, one of Walker’s own supporters filed the first recall petition on Friday, in a cynical and underhanded attempt to secure Walker some extra fundraising time. There clearly is no limit to this guy’s douchebaggery…

  2. @Haku: Can you back that up with, y’know, some facts or figures or reality or something? My parents, both teachers, were members of public employee unions, which allowed my family to enjoy a middle class life as I was growing up (most of my friends, incidentally, enjoyed a middle class life as well, due to the efforts of private sector unions in the auto industry). As an allied health care worker, I now belong to a public employee union, which allows me to enjoy a middle class life just as my parents did. Had either of these circumstances not been the case, I probably would not have had the sort of access to education and employment opportunities that I’ve ultimately had. Those of us who choose to work for public institutions are no less prone to being screwed than anybody else in the absence of collective bargaining. Would you have me or my parents working for less than a living wage, given the choice? Would you have your children looked after by underpaid and stressed out teachers, nurses or technicians if given the choice? Any group of more than two people put together in the same place is inherently corrupt, be it a public sector union, a private sector union, a government, a bank or a sewing circle. C’mon dude, everybody knows this… Bashing on public sector unions may be popular among some, but ultimately, it’s a straw man argument at best.

  3. Just remember if conservatives ever become as classless as liberals and pull this same stunt, you started it and approve of shouting down people.

  4. I do Haku.
I’ve nothing against unions, but PEU’s are a different animal altogether.
They don’t represent what is best for the majority of us, only their members – and have no competition in the marketplace as traditional unions do.
And, looking at their influence over local politics is just as apalling to me as big corporate donations.
Especially with our particular form of local government, they can easily buy out 3 of 5 votes needed.

  5. Hey Andy from Beaverton . . . the conservatives DID start this, with the Tea Party / Tea Baggers shouting down politicians all over this country. It’s the liberals who have learned from the conservatives, that yes . . . they TOO have a voice and a right to express their opinions and their displeasure.

  6. What Dubie said. Conservatives did indeed start this, although not with the Tea Party. They started it when Dubya lied about WMDs in order to use our tax dollars to fatten defense contractors’ and oil and construction companies’ bottom lines with his illegal wars; They started it when they strong-armed Clinton into signing NAFTA, Gramm-Leach-Bliley and Commodity Futures Modernization; They stated it when Reagan knee-capped labor by firing the air traffic controllers. And that’s just as far back as I can remember. They’d been starting it long before Reagan, I can only imagine. Are liberals douchebags? Arguably, yes. But they’re nowhere near as good at being douchebags as conservatives are…

  7. Is something broken in me if I don’t give a shit anymore? None of this matters, or will make a difference, right? At the end of the day, people with money will still make decisions that will screw other people over. Why should I give a fuck if assholes interrupt other assholes at a breakfast?

  8. @FrankieB: Actually, members of PEUs *are* “us”… taxpaying American citizens, that is. And we unionized public health care employees *do* have competition in the marketplace, in the form of those who work for non-union private health care organizations. As do public school teachers, in the form of teachers at private and parochial schools. And last I checked, the Koch Brothers and their ilk have a hell of a lot more influence over politics (local, national and otherwise) than do AFSCME, NEA, et al.

@Andy from Beaverton: You wanna talk about classless conservatives? Okay, I can do that:

  9. What percentage of Portland workers – are union?
Of that, what percentage are PEU?
9 %, more than half of all Oregon union workers are employed by Oregon taxpayers – and that is only 9%.
So – No, you really don’t represent anything close to a majority of us, though we all pay for those shnazzy bennies you got through the nose.
How do bennie packages compare for the average PEU worker here as opposed to non-union workers?
What percentage of people send their kids to public schools vs public schools?
Does non union health care even exist? and if it does, what percentage of it makes up the health care marketplace?
Locally, their influence has been profound, with Leonard on the council. He used to represent the firemans union, right? They got some new toys since he has been around too. etc etc etc.
    Union ? Yes.
    PEU – NO.

  10. Tommy, I hear ignorance is bliss. You must be quite a joyful person.
The Westboro Baptist Church’s actions are not supported by a single conservative group I know of. Their protests also include anti-war slogans with have been used by liberal groups quite often. How you could ever compare the actions of this group and groups that shout down speakers at a podium? There is no comparison.

  11. @FRANKIEB: SO YOU’RE SAYING THAT PUBLIC EMPLOYEES SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO COLLECTIVLEY BARGAIN? WHAT POSSIBLE REASON DO YOU HAVE FOR REMOVING THOSE EMPLOYEES’ LEGALLY GUARANTEED RIGHTS?

  12. Graham, have you ever read FDR’s opinion on federal unions? Here’s a taste: “All Government employees should realize that the process of collective bargaining, as usually understood, cannot be transplanted into the public service.”

Read more at the American Presidency Project: Franklin D. Roosevelt: Letter on the Resolution of Federation of Federal Employees Against Strikes in Federal Service http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/ws/index.ph…

  13. @ANDY: GOOD JOB ON MISREPRESENTING FDR’S WRITING. ACTUALLY ALL FDR WAS SAYING WAS THAT PUBLIC UNIONS SHOULDN’T STRIKE. HE EXPLICITLY STATES THAT IT’S A GOOD IDEA FOR PUBLIC EMPLOYEES TO COLLECTIVELY BARGAIN, JUST THAT BECAUSE THE PROPER RUNNING OF SOCIETY IS RELIANT ON THESE PEOPLE DOING THEIR JOB, THEY SHOULD STAY ON THE JOB.

“The desire of Government employees for fair and adequate pay, reasonable hours of work, safe and suitable working conditions, development of opportunities for advancement, facilities for fair and impartial consideration and review of grievances, and other objectives of a proper employee relations policy, is basically no different from that of employees in private industry. Organization on their part to present their views on such matters is both natural and logical, but meticulous attention should be paid to the special relationships and obligations of public servants to the public itself and to the Government.”

SO ANDY FROM BEAVERTON, GO FUCK YOURSELF AND TRY AND GET BETTER EXAMPLES NEXT TIME.

  14. Graham, I thought FDR was rather well known in his opposition to PEU’s, and this document supports that.
After your quote FDR goes further and uses the quote Andy provided.
OK, I can’t forgive him Beaverton either, but he ain’t misrepresenting FDR on this one bit.
Flat out stating that collective bargaining cannot be transplanted to public service is about as black and white a statement as you can get.
Now, you can disagree with FDR, but that is another question.

  15. “SO ANDY FROM BEAVERTON, GO FUCK YOURSELF AND TRY AND GET BETTER EXAMPLES NEXT TIME. “
A prime example for everyone to see when you don’t have the mental capacity for an intelligent reply. Graham should be at the park blocks with the lice and TB infested protesters.

  16. @ANDY FROM BEAVERTON: YOUR INTELLECTUAL DISHONESTY IS SHOWING (MISQUOTING AND MISREPRESENTING THE FACTS).

@FRANKIEB: THINGS THAT ARE “WELL KNOWN” AREN’T NECESSARILY TRUE. WHAT YOU’RE MISSING IN THE NUANCE OF FDR’S POSITION. HE’S NOT OUT AND OUT AGAINST PUBLIC EMPLOYEES UNIONIZING. FDR WAS AGAINST PUBLIC EMPLOYEES STRIKING AND NOT DOING THEIR WORK. (JUST LIKE I SAID BEFORE). TRYING TO REDUCE COMPLEX ISSUES DOWN TO BLACK & WHITE MORALITY ISSUES IS FUCKING RETARDED. FDR EXPLICITLY STATES THAT COLLECTIVE BARGAINING ON THE PART OF PUBLIC EMPLOYEES IS A GOOD THING.

BUT THAT’S NOT EVEN TAKING INTO ACCOUNT OF THE OBVIOUS HYPOCRISY OF FDR’S POSITION. HE’S SAYING THAT IT’S ALL RIGHT FOR ALL OF THE PEOPLE TO UNIONIZE, EXCEPT FOR THE PEOPLE WHO WORK FOR HIM. I CALL BULLSHIT ON THAT. WHAT’S GOOD FOR THE GOOSE IS GOOD FOR THE GANDER.

  17. I guess it is all in the interpretation, correct?

“All Government employees should realize that the process of collective bargaining, as usually understood, cannot be transplanted into the public service. It has its distinct and insurmountable limitations when applied to public personnel management. The very nature and purposes of Government make it impossible for administrative officials to represent fully or to bind the employer in mutual discussions with Government employee organizations. The employer is the whole people, who speak by means of laws enacted by their representatives in Congress.”

I dunno man, that doesn’t sound so nuanced to me.
FDR, the Great Liberal, one of our finest Presidents, amazing forsight…. anti PEU.

  18. “FDR, the Great Liberal, one of our finest Presidents, amazing forsight…. anti PEU.”
You forgot to include second greatest economist, following Obama. Thank God FDR finally got off the gold standard, otherwise the economy would have totally failed.
