A couple in Scio (a tiny rural Oregon town which has trouble holding onto its mascot fowl) are hosting their own occupation in response to Occupy Wall Street.

Here is their logo:

And here is a quote from a woman who works at the town store: “If we would have an โ€˜Occupy Scio,’ it’d be a party, like our lamb show.”

The false Occupiers are asking everyone to come down to the new fair pavilion and set up a “Capitalist Profit Mall” for the dayโ€”which will likely resemble a sort of Tea Bagger Saturday Market.

“What should you bring to the ‘Occupation’? YOU, your friends and family, an American Flag, money and an ‘I love America’ attitude!”

Sadly, the event is now being promoted by Freedom Works, the shady right wing nonprofit, erasing some of its small town charm.

Sarah Shay Mirk reported on transportation, sex and gender issues, and politics at the Mercury from 2008-2013. They have gone on to make many things, including countless comics and several books.

  1. Oh, they get itโ€”they get that there’s an opportunity to make some money. Scio’s my hometown. Audie’s a genius self-promoter, and the Oregonian never fails to to take the bait. Now he figured out how to get noticed even by the Merc.

I doubt it’ll be a Tea Party affair, unless they come down from Forest Grove. Scio’s politically inclined population is pretty evenly divided between rural conservatives and die-hard commies, but most people there aren’t particularly engaged beyond the local level. Besides the guy with the “vote out all incumbents” sign in his front yard and my parents, who posted a massive Obama sign on the barn in 2008, I don’t recall much in the way of public political expression.

  2. How amusing. Towns like Scio and rural Oregon counties are almost entirely socialist funded by Willamette valley cities who pay most of the state taxes, and by the federal government through the timber payments, water projects, agricultural subsidies, and cheap grazing, to say nothing of copious Social Security payments.

  3. Sadly, the Scio event is about fear and hatred of “the other” on the part of a few particularly vocal people in Scio, financed and organized by an extreme right wing radio personality, who is calling only some people “real Americans”. I used to like to visit Scio, a pretty place near wonderful covered bridges, but when I read the comments by people supporting this event who live in Scio, where they express disgust at their fellow humans who are involved in Occupy movements, seems like there are an abundance of mean people there.

I feel sorry for them.
