Pink Martini and Storm Large organized a lunchtime sing-a-long of classic American tunes today, mixing the music with speeches by political and religious leaders. I made this video of the This Land is Our Land song, including photos of a bunch of people at the rally (and some video of that guy who’s always dancing downtown!).

Sarah Shay Mirk reported on transportation, sex and gender issues, and politics at the Mercury from 2008-2013. They have gone on to make many things, including countless comics and several books.

  1. There you go. Nice big crowd. Diverse. (Agewise anyway.)

Occupy needs to keep coverage on stuff like this and not the problems in the camp. Win the news cycle.

  2. I’m not a huge fan of their music either, but the local backlash of being moderately successful in a small city – especially one with such a vibrant music scene – can be a real bitch. Thomas Lauderdale works his ass off doing so much for charity in this town, it’s ridiculous and he’s a genuinely nice guy. They – and Storm – didn’t have to do this. Cut ’em some slack.

  3. I’m glad that so many people were out and supporting the Occupy movement. Great to create an event where families can go.
I’m still not convinced that Storm Large is worthy of the ink she gets. I’m looking forward to the day when hard work and talent overtake gimmick and attitude. “This land” isn’t a hard song to sell, and even easier with a huge group of people…it’s supposed to be about everyone singing, but her version was all about her…and that’s not what Occupy is about from where I stand.
