Yesterday was, to say the least, stressful. Instead of compulsively sucking down inauguration coverage like the newly minted patriot that I am, I spent the day reading blog comments impugning the integrity of a good friend and former colleague whom I respect tremendously.

It was not awesome.

I mean, goddammit. I only JUST watched Aretha’s amazing rendition of the national anthem “My Country Tis of Thee,” which sounds way less like the worst song ever than usual, and even though I should’ve been listening to Jay-Z’s ridiculous “My President is Black” remix ALL DAY yesterday, it’s soundtracking today instead. So come on. I still want to talk about it.

How was everyone’s inauguration night? Any good parties? See any Obama babies get made? Tell me tell me, and if you’ve got any particularly good photos, send ’em here and I’ll put ’em up.

(For our part, a Mercury contingent swung by the Democrats’ party at the Tiffany Center, at which it was conclusively demonstrated that rich people don’t know how to party, and then a few of us peeled off to the Benson where we continued living beyond our means—a nice man shared a bottle of champagne for a “goodbye Bush” toast, then he and our new favorite bartender, Jonah (?), gave us a comprehensive explanation of cognac pricing [apparently Louis XIII is “the Nike of cognacs”—and I was so impressed that American Cowgirls had a bottle! I’m a rube]. Lebron James was sighted. Then on to the Bonfire for inaugural tacos and one drink too many.)

Alison Hallett served nobly as the Mercury's arts editor from 2008-2014. Her proud legacy lives on.

  1. Why has your editor, Steven Humphrey, not expressed any opinion on this subject yet? Dan Savage promises to give us his take on things in a later blog post, which I’m very curious to read. But Steven Humphrey is your boss, he works with you on a daily basis, and, like Dan Savage, also worked w/ Amy Ruiz for a number of years. And when is the Mercury going to officially announce their position on this matter? You keep posting every other publications take on this – when will the Mercury step up and announce their collective view?

Because honestly, this is starting to look like/sound like a witch hunt, Matt. You also worked with Amy for several years and I can’t help but wonder how much of your motivation is being driven by your personal views, of Amy as a person, how you worked together and how she was as your boss, and how you feel about her moving on to a government job that pays quite a bit more than you make at the Mercury. The line between your duties as a journalist in reporting this and your personal views on the parties involved are getting blurry. Some clarity, please.

  2. I went to the Holocene, which was super fun and included the pausing of all music to air Obama’s speech. The best part about going out yesterday was that the dance floor was packed by 9 pm!

  3. You want satisfaction?

Also, yesterday was awesome! I went to “Inauguration Party” at Side St., but it felt pretty much just like any Tuesday evening at a small neighborhood bar, except with balls on TV. INAUGURAL BALLS, PEOPLE!!! And it was happy hour all night. And everybody was in a happy mood. Such a great day.

  4. The chocolate river did not live up to my expectations. But um…at least there was heat in the building. That was totally rad.

  5. There were a shit-ton of people there. And it was cold as fuck. And the lines were hours long. And my whole body ached from standing 8-9 hours straight. And I didn’t get any sleep the night before due to the constant helicopters hovering overhead and police sirens blaring on the street.

And it was an unforgettable, awesome, and totally worthwhile experience. Amazing.
