Wow.

After making national headlines for a new law on illegal immigrants, the Arizona Legislature passed a bill Thursday that would ban ethnic studies programs in the state that critics say currently advocate separatism and racial preferences.

The bill, which passed 32-26 in the state House, had been approved by the Senate a day earlier. It now goes to Gov. Jan Brewer for her signature.

The new bill would make it illegal for a school district to teach any courses that promote the overthrow of the U.S. government, promote resentment of a particular race or class of people, are designed primarily for students of a particular ethnic group or “advocate ethnic solidarity instead of the treatment of pupils as individuals.”

Naturally, they put the insane part at the end, after stuff like banning the teaching of armed rebellion and outright racism. I’m sure a lot of Arizona school districts were teaching courses that promoted the overthrow of the U.S. government in the guise of “ethnic studies.”

Oh, but It gets better! Gawker reports that Arizona’s Department of Education has also warned teachers that they could be reassigned or fired if they don’t speak English LIKE A DAMN AMERICAN. The WSJ has more.

Ooh, wait! I must include this quote:

“Teachers should speak good grammar because kids pick up what they hear,” said Johanna Haver, a proponent of English-language immersion who serves as an adviser to Arizona educators. “Where you draw the line is debatable.”

Yes! They should speak good grammar! Speak it, American Sister! Speak the good grammar! What kind of name is Haver, anyway? Sounds suspicious.

Anyway, keep it up, dumbasses. The elections in Arizona this fall should be very interesting.

  1. “Promote resentment of a particular race or class of people” aka like getting made at old wrinkly, white Arizonians for passing a law that makes operating a lawn mower illegal

  2. It’s things like this that I use to explain to my family why I will NEVER live there again. My family is all Puerto Rican by the way.

  3. Yes, US History will likely need to incorporate ‘ethnic histories’ as well now.
Which sounds about right to me.

Ho Hum & Yawn. It’s called the experiment of the states.
We’ll see where AZ is in 20 years.

I must admit that coming right after the illegal immigration bill it certainly does seem suspect though.

  4. This is actually something of a persistent rumor amongst the poor, hard working, put upon white folks in Arizona. Growing up there, I was told many times of “ethnic studies” classes which were nothing but TERRORIST PROPAGANDA being taught on the government dime. My civics teacher shared this nugget about “Maricopa Community College” and the class… I forget what the full name was, but in his fantasy it did in fact have the NAME Che Guevarra in the title. And that part of this class was teaching the students how to poison water supplies. Presumably, they all went out and did this because that’s what you do when you’re in a community college ethnic studies class.

Like all sane high school tenth graders, I simply decided this guy was a lunatic, and filed this factoid along with “Bill Clinton refused to release his medical files to the public because his extensive cocaine use eroded his septum.” and “America’s prosperity after World War II was entirely due to the economic and sociological policy of isolation we adopted in the 50’s.”

I didn’t get a good grade in this class.

  5. Well no-one in my family could teach then. Half my family has a VERY pronounced West Virginian accent and the rest a heavy low-German accent (Anabaptist).

As far as “ethnic studies” there goes any discussion about American history in general. WWI, WWII (Japanese/German/Jewish), Civil Rights movement (subversive/ethnic), Irish Immigration and their exploitation, Railroad history (Asians), mining history (swiss/dutch/irish), The Gilded Age (exploitation of European immigrants-Irish, Germans, etc), Settlement of the West (subversive/ethnic), Martin Luther king (subversive/ethnic), Revolutionary War (subversive), etc. etc. etc. etc. Arizona is creating an entire future of stupid children.
