You may remember that on Monday, I promised that the winner of the Walking with Dinosaurs haiku contest would be announced today at noon. It’s now 1:29 pm, and no winner has been announced… because it turns out dino haikus are a contentious matter, and we proved totally incapable of coming to an editorial consensus on which poem was best.
So—to the polls! Please give this matter your most serious consideration, as the commenter whose haiku receives the most votes will be entrusted with a pair of tickets to Walking with Dinosaurs: THE ARENA SPECTACULAR. (Note: We had to fiddle with the formatting a bit; it mostly affected the last one, which was originally three separate verses, each in haiku form.)
UPDATE!!: When the poll was constructed, the line break on haiku #1 was added in the wrong place—the original haiku does in fact adhere to the 5-7-5 structure. (We can’t change it now without losing all the votes so far—but just FYI, that was our mistake, not the commenter’s.)

If blogtown reaches one million hits this afternoon, it is because of me refreshing this page.
Dinos are not your
friends, pets, punchlines or playthings
Ya’ll, first to the wall!
Those are some quality submissions.
Shit has gotten so real right now, I don’t know how to feel.
Clever, but only 2 and 3 are true Haiku. 2 is funny, but 3 gets it for elegance and irony. Good Job #3.
1 and 4 are NOT Haiku and should be spanked.
@rabblevox
See update! #1 was written in 5-7-5, but we mistakenly added the line break in the wrong place.
“Shit has gotten so real right now, I don’t know how to feel.”
I’m just waiting to hear about the Portland cops called in to mediate the inevitably fractious results of this poll, and the adorably learning disabled children they end up setting ablaze.
Portland, OR: Where shit isn’t REALLY real until the cops straight up kill the least threatening person in the room!
Nom Nom Nom should have won!
@Nex: “Portland, OR: Where shit isn’t REALLY real until the cops straight up kill the least threatening person in the room!”
Unfortunately, I don’t think Merc employees qualify for comment of the week.
@Alison
then editorial staff should be spanked
where the fuck is your entry “rabblevox?” Since you are such an amazing Haiku master I am surprised your genius did not make it to the final round.
@cookingasshole
who’s talking genius?
my entry ain’t your business.
remove flame from butt.
I’m gonna declare at winner at 3 PM TODAY.
Haiku #1 by a percentage point. Thanks for playing, everybody.
Awww man. Look at it now! Ah well.
