Like we previously posted, MTV did indeed come to Portland.

And, well, it’s decent.

I sort of expected Jesse Camp to VJ the report, but instead the clip is pretty entertaining as they cover a wide variety of bands–from the basement scene to Colin Meloy–in a tasteful manner. Plus they touch on local food, booze, housing, and just about everything else that is Portland. It’s old news to us, but not a bad report considering it’s from the network that brought us A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila.

  1. From this you’d think there’s no other music genre that gets attention in town besides indie-synth-electro-emo-disco-pop.
    Oh wait …

  2. Horse Shit! You first three horse shitty commenters must have forgotten you were watching MTV. And so you AREN’T popular and you DON’T get invited to fun parties. Get over it.

I think MTV did a fine job even if I haven’t heard of half of those basement dwellers.

  3. i love that colin meloy ” did his time” working at a pizza shop for 3 whole years. man thats why you have a lot of heart, guy. you have had it rough. he deserves a medal. or a plaque

  4. Am I about to defend MTV?

To address the lack of range mentioned above, bands like Eat Skull, Fist Fite, Au, White Fang, Panther, White Rainbow are hardly indie pop, and in fact, they are all pretty unique.

Sure, they don’t cover local metal, hiphop, etc., but considering the source of the video, it’s not bad.

  5. For an MTV piece, true, it’s deeper than one would expect. When I read “MTV” and “Portland” I half expected a video of them interviewing the patrons of Barracuda and the Thirsty Lion.

  6. It’s MTV, what do people expect ? These bands deserve some exposure. My first Summer in Portland has been great – largely to do with a lot of these bands/shows/parties.
