This past Friday morning, Sand in the City trucked 450 tons of sand into Pioneer Square. Nine teams of volunteer sculptors jumped into the sand and in six hours carved characters, creatures and architecture out of the sand piles. By Sunday night, the creations had been entirely bulldozed away.

This was the 15th annual Sand in the City and the estimated 65,000 people who turned out to see the sandcastles and donate to Impact Northwest. I think it’s a cool anomaly inhabiting downtown Portland.

To spice things up, there were also exotic animals (llama!) and car-like robots from OMSI circling the sand sculptures. Lots more photos below the cut.
