Is it too early on a Tuesday morning to talk about drinking cheap beer? No? Good. Tonight you’ll have the opportunity to put your love of American water-beers to some good use with Master of Domestics, a swill beer taste test. Think you can tell the differences between Pabst, Ranier, Oly, Old German, Hamm’s, High Life, Iron City, Budweiser, Coors, MGD, Henry’s and Michelob? If you can, you might even make it through to the malt liquor round! (Okay, it is too early to think about drinking malt liquor.) It’s being hosted by the Florida Room and registration starts at 7. There’s a $10 registration fee, and all proceeds go to the Multnomah County Animal Shelter. Yayy!

  1. A friend of mine and I actually did this on our own once, doing blind taste tests of cheap beers to see if we could find the difference. We stopped halfway through, poured out the swill, and cracked open a six pack of Full Sail instead.

  2. The mega-globalized beer world changes quickly, but at one time Olympia, PBR, and Rainier were all the exact same thing. I probably wouldn’t have believed that claim except I had a friend who worked at the Olympia brewery and he showed me their master list of recipes. Sure enough, recipe X4-7PG (not actual name) got bottled under at least 4 labels (it was 10 years ago and I can’t remember the 4th).

  3. When I first started drinking beer, Oly was what we drank cause it was the cheapest. $4.00 for a case of stubbies (24). Then we discovered that you could buy a case (12) of Oly quarts for the same price and get about 30% more beer. But, unless you drank it fast it got warm and skunky. We were all under 21 at the time, so we just drove around and drank beer. And threw the empties at stop signs and billboards. You must realize this took place 60 years agto and in a very small town and county. Ahhhh, the good old days. Plus, Oly had the series of dots on the back of the label. 1 thru 4 dots. Supposedly the number of dots was how many bases you got on a date.
