As you may or may not know, the Dew Tour is in town this weekend to service all your skate/BMX needs. The main action starts tomorrow at the Rose Quarter, but they’re kicking things off today with something they call “Unlock Your Spot,” where they coax a city to open up a usually-forbidden spot for people to come and free skate. Portland’s spot is Pioneer Square, and anyone can run down there right now and just, er… skate the hell out of it. (I would drop some skate-move names but I don’t really know any except for “ollie.” What’s that one standing trick where you kind of scoot around in a circle without traveling? I can do that one. I also know a handful of former pro skaters, and it seems like a pretty great way to live, so go skate. Or at least watch while you eat your lunch.)

  1. I think an ollie is something you do off of something…like a planter or whatever.

I don’t know for sure. If only there were some way to find out.

  2. This is pretty cool, actually. Wish I still skated.

Do photographers have a tour? Maybe they could lobby to get the square opened up for one day and people could set down a tripod.

  3. The awesome part about this is now for the next month skaters can use the excuse of “But we skated here on August 10th and it was fine!” and they get a free pass.

  4. Wasn’t free to skate at all! They cordoned off a tiny area of the square and laid some plywood down so that a small group of skaters could compete for best trick down a narrow 7 stair.

Kids even stepping on boards in other parts of the square were immediately accosted by security.
