Remember this year’s Super Bowl halftime show? (God, it already feels like years ago.) And remember when M.I.A. kind of flipped you the bird? And remember how everyone lost their shit about it? UPDATE TIME! So it may come to pass that if any fines are levied by the FCC, it very well could be M.I.A. paying them, thanks to an iron-clad contract she signed with the NFL, in which she swore up and down she wouldn’t do anything morally untoward. (In this political environment, I suppose flipping the bird counts as morally untoward.)
And if you’re expecting your highness Madonna to stick up for M.I.A.’s right to “freedom of speech” or whatever… well, you can forget it. Here’s what she had to say on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show about the bird flip.
I wasn’t happy about it. I understand it’s punk rock and everything, but to me there was such a feeling of love and good energy, and positivity it seemed negative. It’s such a teenager…irrelevant thing to do…there was such a feeling of love and unity there what was the point? It was just out of place.
UGH! I thought it was stupid, too—until Madge said this. Go back to your candy bowl full of melted Werther’s Originals, grandma!!

To be honest, the only people I saw flipping their shit about the mini bird flip were Fox News (primarily), and a couple of sports magazine because they had nothing else to write about post-Super Bowl. I literally have heard nor seen anyone else talking about it.
I agree in general but I think your crack about Werther’s Original is off base. My grandma prefers Almond Roca.
Madonna has a couple fun dance songs, but girls preoocupation with her always surprises me.
Remember when Madonna gave Sinead O’Conner shit about tearing up the picture of the pope on SNL?
Madonna, of all people, giving her shit? That was pretty rich too, back then. She has a history of it.
Madonna hates the fact the thing people are talking about most about halftime wasn’t her own performance, but a commercial and another girl flipping off the audience.
In the future, there will actually be television shows devoted entirely to throwing people under busses.
At this point, I’m just assuming that it’s become standard practice for somebody to do something outrageous at SB Halftime so that everyone can lose their shit about it. Gather the peasants together at the Coliseum and feed the slaves to the lions…
I have no problem with it at all. MIA is a stupid twat with rich parents who gives money to terrorist groups( spin that however you want) and basically acts like a spoiled teenager. This was a classic “look at me” gesture. Lame, and outside of idiots with popped collars at dance clubs, nobody in this country knows who she is anyway.
That is so American. Since Korea this country has thrown the M.I.A. and returning vets under the bus.
For such a manly sport, half-time shows are awfully swishy.
Protip for Madonna: if it costs $18 million to create a “feeling of love and unity,” you’re doing it wrong.
