While I appreciate the importance of Twitter for getting out news quickly and enabling a voice to oppressed populations (see Turkey, Egypt, etc.), complaining about how Twitter is sapping the fun and creativity out of its service really sounds like a first world problem. Grow up and stop acting like a massive social media company was designed just for you and that the whole world cares about how witty you can be in 160 characters. If you want to be constrained by form, write some poetry for fuck's sake.
Twitter turned into Facebook a while ago and they put the nail in their coffin when they made it so you couldn't hide images. Twitter was fun when it was just stream-of-consciousness text but it just got bloated and turned into another repository of memes and baby photos. Now, like Facebook, I rarely look at Twitter anymore. It ate itself.
Quick, call Bartlett's Quotations. (Or maybe Bartles & Jaymes.)
