- Portland Center Stage
- This play had its world premiere in Portland. Now it’s headed off-Broadway.
The nominations are in for Portland’s hyper-local theater awards, the Drammys! And it looks like somebody really liked Portland Center Stage’s Lizzie Borden musical last year.
Let’s get this out of the way: I can’t weigh in on that play, or a few others that were nominated, because the Drammys’ year-long approach to nods means that some of these shows ended their runs last May, long before I started at the Mercury. That said, there are some nominations on this list that just. make. sense. Rebecca Ridenour was one of the greatest things about Northwest Classical Theatre Company’s Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet), and it’s good to see her recognized for acting (albeit for a different show). I’m also glad to see Matt Wiens nominated for his sound work in Portland Playhouse’s The Other Place, which was some of the best I’ve seen in recent memory.

Outside the Drammys, it’s been interesting to see Yussef El Guindi’s Threesome—which premiered in Portland—making its way to an off-Broadway run in NYC via Seattle. And Portland Center Stage just sent word that Benjamin Scheuer, who you can still see in his one-man show The Lion, has received a 2015 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Solo Performance for that theater piece.
Here’s what reviewer Haley Martin had to say about Scheuer’s performance: “Wearing a well-tailored suit and a joyful grin, Scheuer enters the stage and, grabbing one of his six guitars displayed on stage, takes a seat and makes himself at home. He begins recounting memories from his childhood… Scheuer recalls feeling so lonely and defeated that you just want to reach out and give him a hug. What keeps the performance from sinking into utter sadness is Scheuer’s ability to find himself through his hardship and use his passion for music as an outlet.”
The Lion runs through June 14 at Portland Center Stage. The Drammy Awards will be announced at a ceremony at the Newmark Theatre on Monday, June 29. More info here.
