Local animator and transit nerd Spencer Boomhower recently put together this great little video about the Columbia River Crossing (CRC) Project.

If you think the CRC has been an overwhelmingly large and confusing project that seems important but you don’t really understand why, this video is a good place to start. Boomhower showed it last week at a Northeast neighborhood coalition meeting and it’s a welcome break from preachy propaganda on either side of the debate about the big bridge.

Sarah Shay Mirk reported on transportation, sex and gender issues, and politics at the Mercury from 2008-2013. They have gone on to make many things, including countless comics and several books.

  1. I cant’ believe how much I learned from watching this video.

It does an excellent job of presenting a complex topic in an easy to understand way.

Great summation of the origins and overview of the CRC project.

Great explanation of the hidden costs.
(Analysis shows that over ten years with interest costs will be closer to $10 billion.)

Great explanations for why it might not (probably won’t) work.

Great explanation of sensible (and less expensive) alternatives for reducing traffic congestion:
(Update the rail bridge center lift span, arterial bridge to reach Hayden Island to draw congestion off of I-5, etc.)

Great suggestions for better uses of our money.

    Love it!!!!
