For those who have cable (and don’t already have the DVD set), the LOGO network will be hosting an epic Buffy the Vampire Slayer marathon on Saturday, May 19 starting at 10 am! From Pop Candy:

The special will count down Joss Whedon’s 10 favorite Buffy eps. Expect to see classics like “The Body,” “Once More with Feeling” and “Hush” during the 10-hour broadcast.

So, what episode do you think will be number one?

Bang bang, choo-choo train, let me see you shake that thang. Wm. Steven Humphrey is the editor-in-chief of the Portland Mercury and has held the job since 2000. (So don’t get any funny ideas.)

  1. CAN SOMEONE EXPLAIN TO ME WHY PEOPLE LIKE THIS BUFFY SHOW SO MUCH? I TRIED WATCHING THE FIRST SEASON AND I TURNED IT OFF BECAUSE IT WAS IMMENSELY MEDIOCRE. SERIOUSLY, YOU GUYS… EXPLAIN IT TO ME.

  2. It’s not very good in Season 1. It only starts to find its footing around the last 2-3 episodes. Seasons 2 and 3 are pretty fun, though. From there, it depends on how strongly the characters have you hooked – if you’re sufficiently invested in the Scooby Gang, you’ll be willing to stumble through the uneven Season 4, the pretty good Season 5, the almost entirely garbage Season 6, and at that point, whether you still even like the show or not, you’re probably gonna watch Season 7 just to see how it ends, which is mixed-to-good.

I’m betting the #1 episode will be Hush. Either that or Once More.

  3. @BOBBY: SO YOU MAKE IT SOUND LIKE IF I JUST WATCH THIS BEST-OF COUNTDOWN, I’LL HAVE EXPERIENCED PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING THE SHOW HAS TO OFFER, BUT I WILL *ALSO* HAVE SAVED MYSELF SOMETHING LIKE 110 HOURS OF TIME.

ALSO, WHAT THE HELL IS THE LEGO CHANEL? WHY DO DANISH PLASTIC BRICKS GET THEIR OWN STATION?

  4. Graham….seriously? Um, ok. First of all, if you are over 18 and not female (pretty sure that’s covered) I doubt you would find anything compelling about the show. It was a precursor to “Twilight”, you know, prepubescent romance fantasies. Why you would pay attention to anything Humphrey cares about is beyond me. Creepy. Anyway, the show is bloody awful, but in fairness Sarah Michelle Gellar is really cute so there’s that I guess. For bonus laughs, watch the god awful movie with that douche Pee Wee Herman that preceded the TV series. Did you just ask people to tell you why something is cool? Tsk tsk Graham…….not too cool. Oh, and for another bonus laugh, listen to Weird Al’s track “All about the pentiums”. Funny ‘Buffy” reference there

  5. I like that the guy suggesting the show is too girly for you started his post with “Graham…seriously? Um, ok.”

  6. It’s a campy vampire show. Its virtues are popcorn escapism, 90s-early 00s nostalgia, and a charming John Hughes-cribbed ensemble teen cast. The first season is rocky, later seasons are uneven. The end.

  7. I’m pulling for Prom and the one where Buffy can hear what people are thinking, both from the superior third season.

That said it all rules from mid season 2 to mid season 7.

  8. SO IT SOUNDS LIKE PEOPLE WATCH HALF OF SEASON TWO, ALL OF SEASON THREE, NONE OF SEASON FOUR, MAYBE WATCH SEASON FIVE, AND THEN THE VERY LAST EPISODE. HOW DOES ANGEL FIT INTO ALL THIS?

ALSO, I’M NEVER GOING TO WATCH ANY OF THESE SHOWS AS I’D RATHER BE WATCHING OLD EPISODES OF MIAMI VICE.

  9. Angel follows a similar pattern in that it fairly sucks for the first season but gets better as time goes on. I never watched the first season of Buffy and don’t feel like I missed anything.

  10. What kind of a name is “Joss” anyway? Is it the masculine variant of the more common “Josselyn?” It sounds pretty phony.

  11. Roberts I was merely suggesting that he might not be in the target audience which was teenage girls and nerds (which covers you). I also fail to see what you are trying to insinuate. Dork.

  12. I have never seen the show but I did see the movie at Lloyd Center Cinemas back in ’92. Kristy Swanson is better than EVERYTHING. EVERYTHING. Yeah, I said it twice.
