R.I.P. Frances Bay, 1919-2011. You will be fondly remembered for your turn as Mrs. Tremond in Twin Peaks. Bay had a knack for playing old ladies who ran the gamut from sugary sweet to creepy as all get-out. You might also remember her as the Marble Rye Lady from Seinfeld and Happy Gilmore’s grandma, or for her countless other bit parts in memory holes from your childhood (Who’s the Boss, Quantum Leap, L.A. Law, Alf, The Golden Girls, and Happy Days). She died of complications from pneumonia last week in Los Angeles.

May your grandson always be holding creamed corn.

  1. She was also a wickedly funny and warm human being. She was my grandmother’s cousin, although to me she was always just Aunt Fran, my very first babysitter. Fortunately, back then she didn’t do the creamed corn bit or else I’d be in therapy.
