It’s Bernie Friday in Portland, and that means your commute might suck. Doors are scheduled to open for the 12:45 pm Moda Center rally at 9:45 am. Steer clear of the Rose Quarter if you’re not trying to see the man (or if you ride a bike, since your commute will be easy, as always).

ICYMI, we’ve got a new street fee of sorts up for consideration. Commissioner Steve Novick swears it won’t cost you a thing. He’d like developers of single family homes to pony up for the curb and sidewalk improvements they’re already supposed to pay for. Why don’t they? Because the city has been letting thousands and thousands of projects slide.

DUCKS>DUKE: U of O’s men’s basketball team took out the defending champs last night, which is great. One more win, and they’re going to the Final Four. Much better than Michigan State, those layabouts.

What’s even better about Oregon’s win: It made Duke Coach Mike Kwkwywkzkwi real mad. He chastised a Duck player for a late-game shot, then steadfastly denied doing so.

Look, I don’t know if you require further evidence that the militants who holed up at the Malheur National Wildlife Sanctuary earlier this year were a bunch of wingnuts. I’ll just say that one of them (allegedly) wrote the following on his rifle’s ammo clips: “Brains and Blood,” “Bye Bye Fed” and “RIP LaVoy Finicum 1/26/16 WAR.”

Police believe they’ve got the man who sexually assaulted a woman near the Springwater Corridor recently. He’d been in prison for 30 years until last August, according to the state Department of Corrections. He also somehow acquired charges for attempted murder, first-degree robbery and unlawful use of a vehicle while in prison according to the DOC, which the O says didn’t elaborate how that would have happened.

The fight over your right to buy liquor at the grocery store is about to get real. The big chain grocers supporting that push just got permission to begin collecting signatures for a ballot measure.

Friendly pit bull approaches an NYC cop, gets immediately murdered.

RIP Garry Shandling, 66, who was felled by a heart attack.

Today in racist, homophobic, and otherwise bigoted laws: North Carolina’s seeing the inevitable blowback from a new law that bans transgender people from using the restroom that corresponds to their gender (and also prevents cities from enacting protections for LGBT people in general).

And if Arizona’s terribly run primaries are any indication—and the NYT believes they are—a slew of new laws purportedly aimed at curbing voter fraud (but actually aimed at deterring likely Democratic voters) will lead to lots of similar fun come November.

Dead: ISIS’ second in command.

Now let’s all shamble toward the weekend, shall we?

I'm a news reporter for the Mercury. I've spent a lot of the last decade in journalism — covering tragedy and chicanery in the hills of southwest Missouri, politics in Washington, D.C., and other matters...

One reply on “Good Morning, News: Bernie Kills Your Commute, the US Kills an ISIS Leader, and the Ducks Kill the Devil(s)”

  1. From the land of unintended consequences I don’t see how any federally funded road or infrastructure project in North Carolina can now even legally advertise for bids on such a project let alone contract for the work.
