Hello, Portland, this is Doug Brown, the Mercury‘s newest news reporter.
I grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and spent most of the last decade in Northeast Ohio for college (Hiram College), grad school (Kent State School of Journalism & Mass Communication), and work. Most recently, I was a staff writer for Cleveland Scene magazine for two years. I left to take a five-month solo road trip around the western part of the continent. That was an experience. I’ll never forget the nasty bed bug bites of Anchorage, the bars of Missoula, the streets of Tijuana, and all the couches and crappy motel beds I passed out on in between.
I apologize for being yet another transplant to this fine city, (at least I’m not from California, right?) but I couldn’t be happier to be living here and working for this publication.
Prior to Scene, I worked for Deadspin, the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Daily Kent Stater, and some other publications. I’m very interested in covering crime, corruption, powerful institutions doing bad things, general seediness, and profiling interesting folks with unique stories to tell. I love public records and developing sources. Know of anything I should know about? Please let me know.
Here are some things I’ve written in the past:
*Cleveland Scene: Roofie Island: A Summer of Reported Druggings and Rapes on Put-in-Bay, Lake Erie’s Party Destination
*Cleveland Scene: Degenerate Inc.: The Paranoid and Obsessive Life of a Mid-Level Bookie
*Cleveland Scene: Turmoil at the Museum: Inside the Affair, Suicide and Abrupt Resignation That Rocked the Cleveland Museum of Art
*Cleveland Scene: Meet the Pro-Slavery Fairview Park Auxiliary Cop
*Cleveland Scene: Cleveland Police Officers Lobbied Judge On Behalf of Indicted Nightclub Owner in Previous Cocaine Distribution Case
*Deadspin: “I’m Down For Drinks, Laughs, Sex”: The Sexual Harassment Claims That Brought Down Toledo’s Running Coach
*Deadspin: “Dangerously Excessive”: How Washington State Football Confronted, And Didn’t Confront, The First Bad News Of The Mike Leach Era
*Daily Kent Stater: The courting of Cope: Behind the scenes of a $1 million withdrawal
So yeah, feel free to call me, email, me, tweet me, mail something to me, send a carrier pigeon, or use smoke signals. I’d love to hear from you.

Welcome to Portland, Doug! It sounds like the Merc is lucky to have you.
“DOUG BROWN?” SO OBVIOUSLY A FAKE NAME. ADMIT YOU WERE SENT HERE BY THE INDUSTRIAL FLUORIDE MANUFACTURERS WHO FUND THIS RAG OF A FRONT OF A JOKE OF A PAPER
NOW TRIM THAT BEARD, PUT ON THIS WIG AND GLASSES, AND WHISPER THE NEWS TO ME LIKE MY DENIS USED TO
Nothing against you Doug (welcome!), but do locals not apply for jobs at our news weeklies?
We’re glad your here. I have a feeling you will get the I/Anonymous Site fixed. Orrrrrrrrrr, did you screw it up? Happy your in Portland.
You’re right, Colin, his name has to go. I suggest “Bonneville D. Withercott.” Sort of leaps off the page and slaps you lightly with its riding gloves.
HI Doug, my dog Rudy and I love crime stories. Remember to travel the back roads. That is where the real stories are.
Hi Doug, no, stay off the back roads and definitely out of the foothills(Estacada or Washougal). And be away from any Coastal town before sunset, or you better be strappin. Good luck.
