THURSDAY AUGUST 30
ART–There’s a lot of art in the world that you look at and think, “Hmmm…
that’s kind of cool,” and then remember you forgot to pay your credit card bill
or that guy still hasn’t called you. Then there’s the art you see every once
in a long while that you can’t get out of your head. This is the kind of art
Muffie White makes, with weird lights, pictures, and things that glow. AND YOU
ONLY HAVE TWO MORE DAYS TO SEE IT! KD
Reading Frenzy, 921 SW Oak, 274-1449, free
FRIDAY AUGUST 31
ELECTRONIC–No, you don’t have to be a tripped-out sixteen- year-old rolling
on E to appreciate electronic music. If you have any interest at all in the
electro-scene (and you should), go see this OMCO showcase including the dark,
static-y sounds of Decapod Claw. It’s their CD release, so pick one up; you
won’t be sorry. KS
Blackbird, 3728 NE Sandy, 282-9949, 9 pm, $5
OLD SCHOOL–Longing for the bigass alarm clocks that once lied gently ‘tween
the folds of your breast? Do you miss yourself some Sugarhill Gang, Kool Herc,
or Grandmaster Flash? Then get your Adidas on over to Seges to hear DJs Vitamin-D and Mello-C spinning the best in old school hiphop. Maybe they’ll
even play some ESG! JS
Seges, 818 SW First, 279-0250, 10 pm, $6
SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 1
PROTEST–Several months ago, a house party in NE Portland went bad–real bad–when
the cops arrived to bust up the noise. In the aftermath, two hosts were accused
of kidnapping a police officer, an offense that carries a seven-year sentence!
Their trial is imminent. Show your disapproval. Police Harassment March today. PB
Maximum Injustice March, starts at North Park Blocks, 232-5547, 11:30 am, free
(but bring your bail money)
MUSIC–It doesn’t really matter if you like the kind of music Bonfire Madigan
sings, because she does it so soulfully and gracefully, you can’t help but stand
there open mouthed, gawking at her vocals and cello. She’s so cool. KD
w/ Urban Legends and the Ex-Hustlers, Meow Meow, 527 SE Pine St, 230-2111,
9 pm, $6
SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 2
MUSIC–It’s a fact that half the crowd will be there anticipating Cat Power’s
Chan Marshall to lose her shit, breakdown mid-song and possibly open-fire
on the crowd. I’m not sure what the other half will be there to do; maybe just
watch her perform the most beautiful and intense music of our generation? I
know it’s a pretty novel concept–attending a Cat Power show just for the music–but
I figure it’s probably worth a shot. EAC
Satyricon, 125 NW 6th, 243-2380
HONKY-FRIENDLY RAP–Like rap music, but hate all those wincing references
to drugs, murder, and putting the “187 on an undercover cop”? Then you’ll love
the Last Chance Summer Dance at Waterfront Park, featuring such feel-good rap
lightweights as Young MC (“Bust a Move”), Tone Loc (“Funky Cold Medina”), and
Sir Mix-a-Lot (“Baby Got Back”). Just good clean fun for those challenged by
the thought of an urban landscape. (For further details see Music, pg 15) WSH
Last Chance Summer Dance, Waterfront Park, 224-4400, Noon to dusk, $19
MONDAY SEPTEMBER 3
MUSIC–Do you ever feel like you’re always in a rush? Rushing to work, rushing
to eat lunch, rushing to finish your beer, rushing to finish having sex before
your mom comes home? It’s a pain in the ass. Spend an evening not rushing
for once, with the slow, subdued pop of the American Analog Set. Their twinkly
sounds float by like a bubble. KS
w/ Her Space Holiday, Norfolk & Western, Blackbird, 3728 NE Sandy, 282-9949,
9 pm, $7
WASTE WATER–Oh, what the farmers in Klamath Falls could do with 40,000 gallons
of water! What do those of us here in the North do with it? Water slides, of
course! If you got it, flaunt it! Three slides, wave pools, hot tubs–all open
for the last day of summer. With one slide that’s 200 feet tall, it’s a wild
scoot down the shoot. PB
North Clackamas Aquatic Park, 7300 SE Harmony, Milwaukee, 794-8080, 12-4 pm, 6-9 pm, $4.99-$9.99
TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 4
FILM–Even if you’re not a comic book fan, don’t let the brilliant and beautiful
Ghost World pass you by. Based on the comic art of Dan Clowes, this disturbingly
real flick paints a picture of the unceasing normalcy of post-high school life.
Directed by Terry Zwigoff (Crumb) and starring Thora Birch, Scarlett
Johansson, and (in the best casting since Shelley Duvall as Olive Oyl) Steve
Buscemi. WSH
Ghost World, Fox Tower, SW Park and Taylor, 225-5555 ext. 4604, see pg 43 for Movie Times
WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER
5
DJ–Damn the rhythmless mire of the midweek! Make it a wicked Wednesday with
DJ Wicked’s underground hiphop and wide-screen movies, both of which are perfect
for breakdancing. So dance (break or otherwise) into the night, then lord your
hangover over co-workers on Thursday. MS
