This just in: Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant has just signed House Bill 1523, that will allow private and public businesses to deny services to anyone who dares defy their religious beliefs—and yep, it's directed right at the LGBT community. From ABC News:

The measure's stated intention is to protect those who believe that marriage should be between one man and one woman, that sexual relations should only take place inside such marriages, and that male and female genders are unchangeable.

"This bill merely reinforces the rights which currently exist to the exercise of religious freedom as stated in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution," the Republican governor wrote in a statement posted to his Twitter account.

Besides the obvious idiocy of this bill, I'm having a hard time figuring out how a restaurant owner would know if a man were cheating on his wife—since the owner could exclude those people as well under this law. It also gives government employees the opportunity to take the day off and not serve LGBT people (though the services still have to be rendered). From a co-workers perspective, that sounds like it gives EXTRA rights to these religious fanatics. BUT! Since Mississippi has also labeled April as "Confederate Heritage Month," we already know where the allegiances of this hillbilly state lie.

Here's further proof of the dreamland in which Gov. Bryant resides:

"This bill does not limit any constitutionally protected rights or actions of any citizen of this state under federal or state laws," Bryant said. "It does not attempt to challenge federal laws, even those which are in conflict with the Mississippi Constitution, as the Legislature recognizes the prominence of federal law in such limited circumstances."

DREAM ON, YOU RACIST, HOMOPHOBIC DREAMER. Hopefully major corporations who have a conscience and do business in Mississippi won't be doing it much longer.
