Contemporary art space Disjecta is launching its Culinaria season in which it brings together art and food to support its curator-in-residence program. It begins on Monday with a dinner prepared by Henry Kibit, formerly of Fireside and Noble Rot. The meal is part of a three-way intersection between chef, exhibiting artists and the curator. Rachel Adams, the curator in residence who is based in Austin, has brought together Claire Ashley and Bahar Yurukoglu for a show called Intimate Horizons, which examines the “relationship between geometric abstraction, landscape and architecture”. It’s up to Kibit to create a menu that responds to this. His starting point? Old kung-fu movies, particularly the relationship between teacher and student, and grasshoppers.
If it’s sounding all a bit cerebral, that’s the point—forget just turning up and gorging on some good food. Kibit is aiming for people “to have continuous questions through[out] the meal—all the dishes have profiles that will be familiar but with just one out-of-place element”. Which sounds like it will be amazing or literally a recipe for disaster. As well as the special, one-off dinner, guests have the chance to meet the chef, curator and artists. Disjecta, 8371 Interstate, September 29, 6:30 pm–10 pm, $100 (including tour of exhibition with curator, dinner and drinks); all four dinners in the season are available for $350.
