Good morning, Portland! If you want to read about Portland’s former “fattest glory holes,” click here. If you want the news, keep scrolling.

Okay, here are the headlines.

Weather or Not: The Trump Administration took the three-day weekend as an opportunity to begin rolling back federal research on climate change. Because if it we don’t believe in it, it won’t exist!

Abortion Rights Update:

Budget Bummer: Multnomah County faces a $6 million budget hole, which means that valuable programs are on the chopping block—including Safety First, a free program that provides a safe location and trained supervisors for parental visits. Most of the people who use Safety First are domestic violence survivors and their families.

The Only: Rep. Janelle Bynum represents parts of Multnomah County and Clackamas County as the only Black member of the Oregon House. As she tells OPB, “It is important that from time to time I express the realities of life from an African American perspective. And that is uniquely different from every other human being in this side of the Capitol.” Read more from the interview here.

ICYMI: This is solidly reaching back into last week’s news cycle, but it’s worth the reminder: The Oregon Legislature has passed a big juvenile justice reform bill. This was despite the best efforts of some Oregon district attorneys who opposed the bill.

Poorly Stocked: Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao has neglected to divest herself of stock in a road paving company—which is a bit of a conflict of interest, considering she’s, you know, the secretary of transportation. It’s unfortunate that in Trump World, this scandal barely registers.

Rights on the Left: You may have heard that transgender rights are under active assault right now. How much responsibility do Democrats have for this reality? And where do the 2020 candidates stand on trans rights? Here’s a deep dive worth reading.

Sentence of the Day: “Flavors change weekly, but I recently destroyed the game with a combo scoop of Spicy Thai Peanut and Earl Grey.” (This is about ice cream.)
