GOOD MORNING, PORTLAND! Oh babe, do you stay up all night thinking how I did you right? Are you missing all the ways I used to keep it tight? LET’S GO TO PRESS.

Happy Fifth of July, everybody! Hope you emerged from yesterday’s holiday with all digits intact. President Trump was busy lowering the collective IQ of a nation with his self-aggrandizing Independence Day party on the Washington Mall, in which he gave a weird history speech about airports existing during the Revolutionary War, as his supporters cheered and his detractors blew whistles. All in all, a pretty forgettable experience that won’t be remembered in 24 hours.

If the races for state legislatures seem more intense than ever it’s because whoever controls a state’s party this time around gets to redraw their districts—as in gerrymandering in order to regain or gain political control.

The Trump administration is scrambling to find some logical, legal reason to include a racist citizenship question on the US census, even though their deadline is today.

Joe Biden gave an interview, and it wasn’t very interesting, but it’s a slow news day soooooo….

The US added 224,000 jobs in June which sounds pretty great until you realize how little these jobs pay.

The biggest earthquake in decades struck Southern California today, and happily no major damage or injuries were reported.

The 67-year-old Mad magazine announced they will stop publication of their influential, satirical magazine, other than a yearly anthology of their old material.

The US Women’s team plays the Netherlands in the World Cup finals on Sunday, and our beloved forward Megan Rapinoe is confident she will be there and on the field.

IN LOCAL NEWS: On Wednesday, Portland Police Chief Outlaw threw together a last-second press conference in which she denied union prez Daryl Turner’s accusation that the mayor’s office have handcuffed the cops during right-wing inspired protests, but that something must be done about those who choose to brawl and that she would like a (probably unconstitutional) law on the books that would make it illegal for protesters to wear masks.

After Portland Police made an unsubstantiated claim that protesters added cement to vegan milkshakes at last week’s protest, members of PopMob (the makers of the shakes) have been receiving death threats. The police have yet to provide any evidence, or take responsibility for the trouble they caused.

RELATED: The hoax-exposing website Snopes has declared the Portland Police’s cement milkshake claim to be FALSE (thanks in part to excellent reporting from our Alex Zielinski, who’s quoted in the article).

The normally very fun and Mercury recommended St. Paul Fourth of July Parade took a hard-right turn yesterday when it featured two far right wing congressional candidates (Patriot Prayer affiliated Joey Nations, and anti-government militia member Angela Roman). No other political parties were represented other than the allegedly “non-partisan” Flush Down Kate Brown recall campaign. We won’t be recommending this parade again.

Very important swimming news: “Portland Is Getting A New Swimming Beach On The Willamette.”

Now let’s look at the WEATHER: A partly cloudy day with a high of 76, and the same goes for the rest of this weekend.

And finally, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, AMERICA! Here’s a dude cutting his grass and dancing in an American flag Speedo.

Bang bang, choo-choo train, let me see you shake that thang. Wm. Steven Humphrey is the editor-in-chief of the Portland Mercury and has held the job since 2000. (So don’t get any funny ideas.)
