“Does Plaid Pantry sell Hustler?”—Erik Henriksen. (He checked, and they do.)
Ezra Ace Caraeff
Ezra Ace Caraeff is the former Music Editor for the Mercury, and spent nearly a third of his life working at the paper. More importantly, he is the owner of Olive, the Mercury’s unofficial office dog. His writing has appeared in The Fader, The Stranger, The Onion's A.V. Club, ESPN's TrueHoop network, and countless fanzines that are thankfully long out of print. He makes a mean tofu scramble and yes, Ace is really his middle name.
Ke$ha Puts Up (Half) a Three Goggle
I blame you for this, Patty Mills. This photo was taken earlier this week at Ke$ha’s sold out performance at the Roseland Theater. The pop star—in the fur coat and GnR shirt—is photographed (possibly) showing off her knowledge of local basketball memes.
Let’s All Laugh as Justin Bieber is Riddled With Bullets
This footage is from a Portland Police training video last night’s episode of CSI, where a criminal Das Bieb is gunned down by the coppers for some reason. In other news, Wm.™ Steven Humphrey has taken a personal day and is in mourning. (We don’t have the heart to tell him that this is not […]
Name This Band: “Tuxedo Shirts for Everyone” Edition
It’s baaaaack. Name This Band returns with these four classy gentlemen. Oh, and in case you are curious, yes they are a reggae band from Orlando. Of course they are.
This Week’s Mercury Music Section
So this exists. Good to know. Another week, another Mercury music section to read while you wait for the rest of Portland to throw a Phil Collins Day Parade. I can get behind Egypt or Bahrain, but that is one march where brutal force is absolutely justified. The Decemberists head to the country—well, Happy Valley—and […]
Let’s Move to the Country
The Decemberists strip down to move forward.
Blazers vs. Hornets – Hot Live Blog Action
Live from the Rose Garden as the Portland Trail Blazers put out the good china and cloth napkins and welcome the New Orleans Hornets. According to Brandon Roy, tonight was supposed to mark his glorious return from dual knee surgery, but the team disagreed with that medical assessment—despite a note from his esteemed physician, Dr. […]
Win a Pair of Brandon Roy Skullcandy Headphones!
WANT! In what clearly is the single greatest item of Blazers merchandise since Gumby Bonzi Wells, the makers of Skullcandy has produced these sharp looking Brandon Roy headphones. Part of their NBA “Skullcandy Crew,” Roy joins fellow ballers Kevin Durant, Derrick Rose, James Harden, Andre Iguodala, and Deron Williams, with his own headphone line. If […]
AgesandAges – “Navy Parade” Video
Last week at their sold-out show at Mississippi Studios AgesandAges had a little surprise in store for the crowd. No, not the confetti shower (although that was nice, it felt like Rip Taylor was in the balcony). Instead the band premiered the Alicia Rose-directed video for “Navy Parade.” The song is an interesting choice for […]
What Happens When Tickets Sell Out Before the Box Office Opens?
A loyal Mercury reader was unable to purchase tickets to see Adele despite being first in line at the Crystal Ballroom box office. The Hardy Boys were busy, so the End Hits Mystery Team investigates.
Our Esperanza Spalding Interview from 2002
SANDRINE LEE Long before she upset Justin Bieber and took home the Grammy for Best New Artist—thus unleashing the wrath of those stricken with Bieber Fever—Esperanza Spalding was an up-and-coming musician from Portland. Before she set off for college and (eventually) jazz stardom, Spalding fronted the trio Noise for Pretend, who was signed to local […]
