In a move that can only be described as the exact opposite of the way things should be going, Black Hawk, the smallest town in Colorado with only 118 residents, has recently banned bicycles on their roadways. Michael Copp, the City Manager, said that the city council “believe their actions are what’s best for it’s citizens in Black Hawk, which are casinos and their patrons.” Copp’s logic definitely makes sense, because people can’t relax and enjoy themselves while they are gambling if there are strangers riding their bicycles all over the streets outside! That would be chaos! Local bike enthusiasts respond with a small protest:

If you are “caught riding a bike” in Black Hawk you can expect to receive a $68 ticket, which is probably less money than you would have lost if you actually made it to the casino without getting stopped. In any case, we here in Portland should all get on our bikes, enjoy the beautiful weather, and breathe a sigh of relief that we aren’t one of the 118 people who live in Black Hawk, Colorado. Amen. 1. “probably less money than you would have lost if you actually made it to the casino” is a great point. I’m sorry that, as an intern, you weren’t paid to make that point.

  2. Yup. That’s life outside of our progressive bubble. Is this really all that surprising? I’m shocked bicycles aren’t banned up in La Center, WA. Most places where there’s casinos and such aren’t very friendly to bicyclists because they have to be put out in the middle of nowhere usually. Even the proposed casino in Wood Village is relatively in BFE, although not as bad as Grand Ronde or Lincoln City.

  3. God bless them.
As the driver who prevented a lot of others from running into the drooling helmet wearer cycling down the MIDDLE OF THE SOUTHBOUND CAR LANE OF NE MLK this morning, I say stop the madness before Darwinism takes them all out.

  4. It’s the children who will suffer. What child can afford a$68 ticket I ask you? WHY DON’T THEY THINK OF THE FAT LITTLE CHILDREN!!!???!!!
