Mmm... obese people on vintage bikes.

It’s that time of year where I’m the slowest cyclist on the road. While the roadies and hardcore commuters zip past me through the rain, I’ve been longing for summer and the return of beater bikes and laid-back rides.

Luckily, there’s some high quality bike fun on the horizon for the end of January. The interesting-sounding bike rides are piling up on my calendar, so I figured I post a rundown.

Portland’s 1st Annual Tweed Ride at the end of the month looks like it’s going to be awesome. I mean, just check out the poster:

Sunnyside Tree Planting by Bike: Friends of Trees is looking for help planting trees by bike around Southeast. That sounds like a wholesome way to spend a weekend. Jan. 23rd, 8:30 am-1 pm info

The Economics of Stripping: A less wholesome way to spend your Saturday, a former stripper and an IRS-certified tax preparer will discuss the money issues behind Portland’s most infamous industry: why strippers do and do not unionize, why hairy armpits can snag strippers more cash and the low-down on strip clubs’ “bizarre money structures.” Plus a bike ride field trip! Pinball Pedal: Tour the city’s best pinball machines with a pinball pro. Bring quarters for the machines and some money for drinks and donuts. Jan. 30, 4 pm info

Sarah Shay Mirk reported on transportation, sex and gender issues, and politics at the Mercury from 2008-2013. They have gone on to make many things, including countless comics and several books.
