There are some interesting witness accounts contained within the now-public police request for a search warrant in the case of Wayne Conrad Thompson, the Kia Sportage driver who struck and nearly killed Portland cyclist Mike Luther two weeks ago. Conrad is currently being held in jail on charges of first and second degree assault with a deadly weapon (the deadly weapon being his car) while Luther remains in Legacy Emanuel hospital, slipping in and out of consciousness.
Luther’s family met with reporters last week to emphasize that Mike was a safety-first, pacifistic guy. “He’s not a fighter at all. Whenever there’s a squabble, he’s always the one in the middle, calming everyone down,” said Mike’s sister Traci. But according to witnesses, the incident that left Luther seriously injured seems to have originated from some sort of altercationโhow or if Luther was involved is not clear. For his part, Thompson has a clean record and was not drunk at the time.
From the police affidavit:
Alme Joseph Franklin, a white male, who was seated in his van in the parking lot near the collision told Officer Robertson he heard someone yell, “Fuck you, mother fucker!” Franklin told Officer Robertson he looked toward the direction of the yelling and observed a white colored SUV type vehicle being driven by a white male who “threw it into reverse and backed up at full speed.” Franklin added that the vehicle hit a male riding on a bicycle. He estimated that the vehicle was traveling in reverse at approximately 40 miles an hour… Franklin also told Officer Sweeney the driver of the vehicle was looking backwards over his left shoulder, in the direction of travel, and appeared agitated.
A second witness, Eugene Jackson, was in his car in the parking lot when he heard someone say, “Fuck you!”
Jackson said he then observed a white colored Kia vehicle traveling south in the parking lot in reverse, when it backed over a male that was on a bike. Jackson added that the vehicle struck the bicyclist so hard that the male victim appeared to be stuck to the back of the vehicle.
A traffic officer trained in accident reconstruction arrived on the scene and tried to piece together what happened.
It was his belief that the vehicle was traveling at a high rate when it struck the bicyclist, continued through a planter area, subsequently forcibly dislodging a boulder I estimated to be in excess of 100 pounds.

The headline here still calls this thing a “crash,” lumping it in with all the other car vs. bike stories. It’s just an assault, it’s just an attempted murder. Stop referring to it as a traffic accident!
Won’t anyone think of the poor defenseless boulder?
-OR-
It’s like that scene in Quicksilver where Gypsy ran over Voodoo.
Reymont,
The incident is still an alleged assaultโThompson hasn’t been proven guilty of anything. Until a judge or jury decide what happened, I think the most accurate way to sum up this confusing incident in a headline is as a crash.
SMirk, I really think you should be asking the Multnomah DA why the charge isn’t attempted murder. Wayne Conrad Thompson tried to murder Mike Luther.
To “Jesus Fucking Christ” – so, did someone pay you to blog that, or is that an “official” statement of the PPD…?
I mean, honestly, do you know the guy driving the car? I do, and he isn’t the type to go off half-cocked and plow someone over, even if Luther had made a derogatory comment about Thompson’s mother, who he had just dropped off at work.
Thompson was in a hurry and wasn’t double checking like he should have, and just drove how he always drove – more concerned about being in the way of other drivers in the parking lot.
But if you’ll look around on the web, there do seem to be an inordinate number of reports about Wayne’s incident with Mark being tagged into a “follow-up” after a recent fatal accident in the same area.
An astute person would notice the paradigm. Someone’s trying to wrap up two birds with one stone – *if* they could spin it just right… Plus, Wayne was apparently a “person of interest” for a number of other reasons, so this gave the PPD the perfect opportunity they’ve been waiting for to “shake that intelligence branch” and see what falls out.
Wayne was the one who called 911 for an ambulance for the guy, saying, “I just hit someone with my car!” in surprise.
Look into the back stories before you go posting that someone tried to kill somebody – you’re obviously either politically or socially motivated and trying to load the jury full of drivel and horseshit about his “automatic guilt” – and trust me, they don’t need the help. Modern “justice” is a machine – let it run its course.
Wait till its your turn to get cuffed – then you’ll understand. ๐
