Verda Cocina

Verde Cocina, the locally-owned market and café chain that serves up super-fresh and super-healthy Mexican fare, will be closing their location in the Pearl District on Sunday, May 24.

In a press release, owners Anna and Noé Garnica cite the effects of the coronavirus pandemic on the decision to shut down this location, but emphasize that their other locations in Hillsdale and Sylvan Highlands will remain open for delivery and curbside pickup.

"Please do not for one second count Verde Cocina down and out," the release reads. "We continue to provide your favorite dishes for takeout at our other two locations and at farmers markets. And look for us in new spots soon with exciting changes to bring you the healthiest and tastiest options possible, so we can all stay healthy and well through this difficult time and into the new world."

The Mercury last caught up with Verde Cocina in 2015 for a feature about brunches, in which our own Wm. Steven Humphrey had this to say about their weekend menu:

"[All] the dishes at Verde Cocina come heaped with super-fresh local produce—though it doesn't in the least detract from the Mexican delights beneath."

The Pearl District café—located at 524 NW 14th—will continue to serve up food from noon to 8 pm through Sunday.

Community, Friends and Neighbors, With grateful hearts, we, the owners and staff of Verde Cocina en la Perla, want to express our appreciation for the support and love we’ve found at this location in the Pearl since we opened in the fall of 2012. Regretfully our last day of operation at this location will be Sunday, May 24. While the effect of COVID-19 on restaurants has been brutal, and our 14th Ave loss is a direct result of this circumstance, please do not for one second count Verde Cocina down and out! We continue to provide your favorite dishes for takeout at our other two locations and at farmers markets. And look for us in new spots soon with exciting changes to bring you the healthiest and tastiest options possible, so we can all stay healthy and well through this difficult time and into the new world. Stay safe out there, Portland! We love you! We are SO THANKFUL for your support, and we’ll see you soon. Blessings, Noe & Anna Garnica and the Staff of Verde Cocina en la Perla
