Wells Tower first caught my attention in McSweeney’s 23 with “Retreat”, a story about brothers in Maine who go moose hunting together, an endeavor that I now never wish upon myself or anybody I know. His first book, a collection of short stories called Everything Ravaged, Everything Burned, came out earlier this month and has been getting wildly positive reviews. He has knack for turning human suffering into deadpan hilarity and though I haven’t yet read the book, I’m pretty excited. Below is an animated short based on the title story and if you’re still unsure about this guy, you can read an excerpt from the same story here.

  1. If you’re interested in finding out more about Wells Tower, take a look at an interview with him in the inaugural issue of Wag’s Revue. Wag’s is a new online-only literary quarterly, and in our interview with Wells he tells us about life as a carnie, his radical revisions of his stories, and being in lower Manhattan on 9/11, among other things. We also have interviews with Dave Eggers and n+1’s Mark Greif, as well as original fiction, nonfiction and poetry. Thanks for checking it out. http://www.wagsrevue.com.
