I’ve never read Katsuhiro Ôtomo’s Akira manga, and the last time I saw the anime adaptation of it—which Ôtomo directed—I was in high school. (The only things I remember about it are that the motorcycles looked badass, it ended with some kind of mutated thing and a nuclear explosion [possibly a mutated thing turning into […]

“We Aim to Kill the Magical Cocksucker.”
The more I see of David Gordon Green’s Your Highness—new red-band trailer below, BTW—the more I want to see it. And get stoned. And possibly play D&D. But most get really, really stoned. Video: Exclusive: ‘Your Highness’ Trailer (Mature Audiences)
‘If You Only Own One Type Of Pokémon … That’s Racist.’
There’s not really much intro I can offer for this thing. Some of you are going to be all, “I’m far too cool to admit I know what’s going on here” while tuning a guitar or putting stickers on a fixie. The rest of you are going to be all, “that’s a surprisingly well-crafted Geodude” […]
I Love You, Amy Pond. I Love You Too, Amy Pond.
Thanks to the Comic Relief/Red Nose Day business that was on the BBC over the weekend, there’s some more Doctor Who in the world, which is obviously an excellent thing, but even more excellent is that this new Doctor Who mini-episode features two Amy Ponds. That is all. Via AICN.
America, Meet Your New Wonder Woman
Courtesy of EW, here’s your first look at Adrianne Palicki in her new Wonder Woman costume, debuting this fall. Okay, stop staring at her breasts. Seriously, stop. Okay, fine: stare at her breasts. I agree, they’re magnificent. FINISHED? Good. Now, how are you feeling about the rest of the costume? I’m preferring the skin-tight leggings […]
Yes, For Realsies: Meowvel Vs. Catcom
suzuran Click to embiggen Well, looks like we can shut down the Internet folks. It ain’t gettin’ any better than this. [Propers to Catcom … er, Capcom Unity for the heads up, and double propers to deviantartist ‘suzuran’ for creating this brilliant image. Negative propers however, to all the scrubs who play nothing but Dante, […]
Today’s Nostalgia Blast: Campbell Whyte’s 8-bit Dreams
Those of us who claim membership in the “Nintendo generation” don’t just get comforting feelings from reminiscing about all the good times we had with Bionic Commando and Contra. No, it seemingly goes much deeper than that. It’s as if nostalgia is the true social currency of our people. You just aren’t cool unless memories […]
Nerd Watch: Emerald City Edition (Part II)
ECCC t-shirt; art by Mike Mignola (Part I is here.) I’m not sticking through all the way to the bitter end—I’m writing this on the train back to Portland! Wheee!—but I’m gonna go ahead and call it: This year’s Emerald City Comicon was pretty great. Straddling the difference between a staunchly indie show like Portland’s […]
Nerd Watch: Emerald City Edition
Photo via The One True b!X Yes, that is Felicia Day of The Guild holding a drawing of a penis, only one of the highlights of Day Two of Seattle’s Emerald City Comicon. (That panel was moderated by Mercury Senior Editor Erik Henriksen, who actually did NOT fuck it up—video here). It’s my first time […]
Super Trailer: “SHUT UP, CRIME!”
My reign as “Blogtown Nerd for the Day (without the smell)” continues! Fellow geeks! Behold the first full-length trailer for Super: the Rainn (The Office) Wilson amateur superhero movie which seems a lot like Kick-Ass with 67% more comedy. It definitely has potential—besides Wilson, there’s Kevin Bacon, Ellen Page (as the sidekick), Nathan Fillion (as […]
Tron: Uprising Trailer…and WAIT! It’s Actually GOOD!
Pop quiz, hotshot! Who has two thumbs and gets to cover the “geek beat” on Blogtown today while all the asthmatic office nerdlings are off to the Emerald City Funnybook Farm Convention? (No way I’m going—I hate the smell of nerd.) THIS GUY!! And I was cracking my knuckles in anticipation of verbally destroying the […]
3D Star Wars: The Phantom Menace to Be Released Next Year
George Lucas will release a 3D version of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace on February 10th 2012. He will presumably then release 3D versions of the other five movies “in order” after that. My question is: How do we get people to agree not to go see these piece-of-shit movies?
