Saturday, Sunday, and yesterday. What do these days have in common? Police-on-dog shootings following dog-on-person maulings. A play-by-play:
Saturday Afternoon: Pit bull lunges at Washington County deputy in Rock Creek neighborhood. Deputy’s partner shoots, but does not kill, the dog.
Sunday Morning: Portland Police officers get a call saying that a pit bull is attacking multiple people near SE 124th and Powell Court. Officers respond, find a dog mauling an adult male. One officer fires a shot, the dog runs away. Another officer chases the dog, shoots, kills.
Yesterday, 12:40 pm: The Portland Police respond to another dog attack call. The arrive on the scene, and a three-dog pack advances on them. Officers shoot and kill the most aggressive dog. They chase and restrain the remaining two dogs. The first press release identifies the dogs as pit bulls, but we received an update at 3:39 that the dog shot was a Cane Corso, not a pit bull (pit bull slander?).

All people injured had what the PPB describe as “non-life-threatening” wounds. But come on, people/dogs, this whole atmosphere of aggression is really harshing my post-long-weekend mellow.

Angela –
Please post your cell phone number so the police can call you to handle it the next time somebody is being mauled by an aggressive dog. Thanks…
Ditto.
And I love dogs.
But I do not love the evil motherfuckers who “adopt” pit bulls and abuse/neglect them.
ok, I know the Dog that was shot on June 1st. The other 2 that ran off, I don’t know them and they have a different owner than the one that was shot. (no, I don’t own any of the dogs involved in all this, but I do own a Cane Corso)
She was certified as a protection dog by the Portland police, had Her CGC, ATTS, and other arious awards and certifications. I don’t know what the police saw that lead them to think she was being aggressive, but I know she usually views police as the good guys and always wanted to greet them.
The fence that was containing her and her pack had a plank BUSTED IN FROM THE OUTSIDE (personaly inspected and verified by animal control). She and her daughter got out, but at the time of the shooting all of her pack (includeing her daughter) had been secured inside the house for a short time. She was the only one whose location was unknown by her owner.
There is a good chance that the bites were caused by the other 2 dogs that were running loose. and a very good chance the the 2 dogs were chasing the Corso and she ran to the cops for help and got shot. I don’t blame the cops, I am sure they did the best they could with the information available.
I am still trying to find out information about the 2 unidentified dogs.

The Cane Corso is an Italian breed of dog highly valued in Italy for years as a companion, guardian and hunter. Cane is “Dog” in Italian and Corso is derived from the Latin “Cohors” which means “Guardian”, “Protector.” And considering how many women come to me asking where they can get a dog like mine (a Cane Corso) because they want to feel safe when home alone in Beaverton suburbia… they definitely have a place in society. Over the last decade many courts have determined that people are responsible for their own personal safety.
Jack Russell Terriers, Dachshunds, Spaniels, all hound, and all terriers were breed to hunt and kill animals on their own. “Bull” dogs were not breed for killing, but assistance when dealing with bulls. These dogs were used as catch dogs for semi-wild cattle and hogs, to hunt, to drive livestock, and as family companions. For the last couple hundred years they were trying to breed Human aggression out of “Pit Bulls”, and yes they were breeding for Dog aggression. The standard was that a human they never met (the ref) could reach into a dog fight and separate them. If they ever bite a human at all then they were immediately taken out back and killed.

pitt bull slander indeed, aided and abetted by you
what gives with the PoPiggies of late? seem to be they’ve knock down all barriers to killing and are on a spree. wonder if all that steroid abuse has gotten a lot of ’em’s Testosterone levels grossly out of whack and they’re more prone to killing as result? Terrible is it not?
I also knew Padamae. Her son is my dog. She was not violent or unstable- in fact she was certified as stable by the police in her work with them, and has the title to prove it. This dog was SACCI Bitch of the Year, 31 times best of breed, CGC, TT, certified all over the place, shown and handled by judges hundreds of times- she couldn’t be vicious and have the titles she has.
And she was sweet. I rubbed her big pregnant belly and held her babies when they were only tiny. She loved putting her paws up on my lap and getting tummy rubs. She was not a monster.
Her yard was broken into, she was terrified, she was familiar with the police and probably was running to them for protection. They saw a big brindle dog, panicked and now she is dead. This is a terrible, avoidable tragedy. Her baby is the light of my life and if he grows to be half of what his mom was I will be proud.
