Portland summer has reached fever pitch, and there’s simply too much
going on for you to loaf around at home. So let’s get it on!
THURSDAY, JULY 30
For nine years, Jason Brown’s been curating
art shows at the Goodfootโeverything from quirky outsider art to
the popular Art of Musical Maintenance poster show. Tonight
marks the release of The Pack Vol: 1, a glossy and
gorgeous book collecting work from 12 artists who have shown in the
space over the years. (Plus, work from the artists will hang in the
Goodfoot all month!) AH
Goodfoot, 2845 SE Stark, 5-11 pm, FREE, through Aug 25
Tragedy, illness, and near-death have yet to
slow down the mighty Alejandro Escovedo, and after witnessing
the legend in action tonight, you’ll understand why. His heartfelt
alt-country sound is undeniableโI dare you to find a sadder
record than Thirteen Yearsโand even his most recent
material (last year’s Real Animal) continues to build upon his
legacy. EAC
w/Jesse Winchester; Aladdin Theater, 3017 SE Milwaukie, 8 pm,
$22.50-25
FRIDAY, JULY 31
Benefiting Special Olympics Oregon, the
Trail Blazers Street Jam returns with yet more blazing
three-on-three basketball action, in addition to round ball clinics for
kids, three-point shoot-outs, and (my favorite) the slamma-jamma-ramma
slam-dunk contest! (That’s my name for it.) WSH
Rose Quarter, One Center Court, Fri-Sun, 10 am-5:30 pm,
FREE
SATURDAY, AUGUST 1
Rogue sponsors the annual Bones and Brew benefit for the Oregon Zoo. Twenty microbreweries and a ton of BBQ make
this dog-friendly beer fest worth it. Besides, you can’t go wrong with
a Kobe Blue Balls-eating contest. Or maybe you can. PAC
Rogue Brewpub, 1339 NW Flanders, Sat 11 am-9 pm, Sun 11 am-7 pm,
$3 donation for entry
We are not being ironic or snarky when we tell
you that you absolutely must not miss the Washington County Fair
this weekend. Why? There will be racing pigs. That’s right, an
actual pig race, featuring Cook’s Racing Pigs, who haven’t appeared at
the fair since 2001. On your marks… get set… oink! NL
Washington County Fair, 873 NE 34th, Hillsboro, Thurs-Sun 10
am-11 pm, FREE
SUNDAY, AUGUST 2
I don’t know how they substantiate this
claim, but organizers of the Hottest Day of the Year bike ride allege they have built Oregon’s longest Slip ‘n Slide at the end of the
sweaty 15-mile trek. Please please please let it end in an
Olympic-sized pool of Jell-O. SM
Lucky Lab Beer Hall, 1945 NW Quimby, 10 am, $30-40
TUESDAY, AUGUST 4
It’s never a good idea to cage a panther,
but the wee lads of Panther the band can probably squeeze
into Valentine’s. It’s the audience that’s going to have to cram. Just
try to leave Charlie some room for floor snaking. MS
w/123 Knife; Valentine’s, 232 SW Ankeny, 9 pm, donation
