A lot of people are tripping balls over this new study released today claiming that alcohol is more harmful to society than heroin. Let’s go to the graph!

As you can see, the purple bar denotes the harm that’s done to others by the drugs, while the gold bar signifies the harm done to the individual. Putting the two figures together provided researchers with their conclusion that alcohol is more harmful overall than, say, marijuana. (Personally, I think I’m far more in danger of being bored to death by someone smoking marijuana… but I think that info’s for another study.)
It should also be noted that OF COURSE alcohol is the most dangerous since its the most plentiful and illegal legal (not counting smokes). If Portland were dotted with meth bars, the graph might tell a different story.

Okay. I’ll dig up some Justin Bieber news.

Bang bang, choo-choo train, let me see you shake that thang. Wm. Steven Humphrey is the editor-in-chief of the Portland Mercury and has held the job since 2000. (So don’t get any funny ideas.)

  1. I’ve never even heard of Mephedrone, Khat, or Buprenophine. And like you said – there are bars on every corner! Some people just try too hard to be different.

  2. Now, alcohol clearly has it’s downsides. Nonetheless:

1.) This is the UK. The UK is one, big drunken rampage.

2.) Take it away, lead researcher: “Prof Nutt told the BBC: ‘Overall, alcohol is the most harmful drug because it’s so widely used.’

This guy gets an F in statistics. Regular stairs are far more harmful to society than escalators because overall, regular stairs are so widely used (and so more people fall down them).

3.) They also didn’t adjust for benefits. http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,…

  3. @ROM: If you’re out in the BF Lincolnshire or wherever, you may not have access to the more refined teen wasters, your marijuana or your nitrous oxide or what have you.

  4. some drugs can make you
    into a fighter
    others a lover
    an all-nighter

    grass makes you looser
    gin makes you tighter
    heroin heavy
    butane lighter

  5. For “make” in the first line read “turn.” I made a last-second change, and it was WRONG. Yes, I’m taking this far too seriously. Must be the shrooms.
