This weekend the Portland International Beerfest takes over the North Park Blocks, with an esoteric selection of beers from around the world. How “around-the-world” are we talking? Well, the event’s website doesn’t have a “beer” list, it has a “bier” list, and if you can pronounce all the different kinds of “bier” on that listโ€”Slaapmutske Triple Nightcap! Kulmbacher Mรถnchshof Schwarzbier! Nรธgne ร˜!โ€”well, then, you probably already have tickets.

But let’s say you don’t! Right now advance tickets are $20, which gets you entry, beer glass, and 10 tasting tickets. (It’s $25 at the door.) But we’ve got two pairs of tickets to give away for FREE for Blogtown commenters. The Beerfest takes place 4-10 pm on Friday, July 15; noon-10 pm on Saturday, July 16; and noon-7 pm on Sunday, July 17. Please be advised that you’ll need to come by the downtown Mercury office to pick up your tickets during office hours (Mon-Fri 9-5) so don’t enter if you aren’t able to do so.

Here’s how to win: simply leave a comment describing the last beer you drank. It can be just a quick ‘n’ dirty description, or a full, flowery, beer-geek review (nerd). Your choice. Any beer at all is fine, whether it was PBR or an aged Westvleteren (nerd). We’ll pick two comments at random and award a pair of tickets to each winner. Commenting closes 9 am Thursday morning; winners will need to come by either Thursday or Friday to get their tickets. Good luck!

UPDATE: This contest is closed and the winners have been notified.

  1. I had a Hop Czar IPA from Bridgetown last night and it was surprisingly decent. I had basically given up on Bridgetown but it seems like they are at least trying to keep up with their competition.

  2. Beer, beer, beer, beer, beer! The last sip to pass o’er my lips was Cascade’s Port Reserve Sour. That’ll put a pucker on your puss!

  3. The last beer I had was a Copacetic IPA. It was all hoppy and shit. There was booze in it, and I enjoy that kind of thing. After finishing it, I ordered another. After finishing three of them I behaved in an even more obnoxious and demonstrable manner than I normally do. It didn’t matter, though, because it was late and everyone else was also soused. I like beer. The end.

  4. I had a cherry cider at the Academy Theater in Montavilla. Does that even count as beer? We were watching Thor. Seemed like a good pairing.

  5. Bayern Maibock lager. Slightly skunky, like tonguing the Grolsch cap you’ve just smoked a jay out of. A touch of Labrador Frito feet, with a finish reminiscent of 5pm bike messenger taint.

  6. Alaskan Amber Ale, Soooo smooth going down, great aftertaste. Bought a 12pack, the first four went into my crockpot with the corned beef. BEST CORNED BEEF SEASONING EVER!!!! I highly reccomend it.

  7. I had a Laurelwood Hipster Sunburn farmhouse ale last night. It’s brewed with Upright’s yeast strain, and I could tell that from the aroma from about two feet away. Kind of like a blend of Upright Four and Engelberg Pils, it was refreshing and delicious. I’m also pretty interested in hearing the backstory on the beer’s name.

  8. I enjoyed several Sessions provided by one of my kickball team members at Gabriel Park last night.

I used it to both fuel, and wash down, our epic one-run defeat.

  9. Last beer I had was Undercover Shut-Down IPA from Lagunitas. It comes in a small bottle with a simple and smart label, but do not let that fool you! It boasts a fantastic taste and near 10% alcohol volume! After two you will wonder why you feel so great, only to remember that beyond the fantastic hoppiness, their is plenty of alcohol to make you forget about that guy that cut you off on Belmont…bastard.

  10. I had a dream a few nights ago that I drank some rather vile beer from a never-opened, screw-off top, widemouth can, and only noticed afterward that it dated from 1968. And I haven’t had any beer since (wine, yes, of course!)…so does that count?

  11. I stole the last of my wife’s Black Butte Porters, which we call “Black Butt” around the house. It’s reliably malty and sweet, not too heavy, not too light.

  12. I usually drink fancy beer but the last beer I drank was while camping. We had run out of water and were waiting for our friends to show up with more so I drank the next best thing to water — PBR. International Beer Fest is my favorite of the annual beer fests.

  13. When I poured it in my mouth and around my lips I had a mouth and taste experience that left nothing to be desired. It was quite exotic. Tecate, I think it was called. It looked exactly like it sounds.

  14. I had a delicious Blond Bombshell today. The crisp and coolness of this beer reminded me of the crisp cool weather we’ve been having lat… WHAT THE FUCK!?! THIS IS FUCKING JULY! WHERE THE FUCK IS MY SUN!?!

  15. Last night I got a free Miller High Life for being the MVP in my clubsports indoor soccer match. They gave me the award because I was obviously the worst player in the team, so I needed that beer.

  16. Last night i had a Deschutes Twilight Ale. Its one of my favorite bottled beers, and i always look forward to the summer because of it.

  17. The last beer I had was a Raspberry Wheat from ShockTop. It was a great fruity beer and perfect for sunny summer days… my new fave!

  18. The last beer I had was a Raspberry Wheat beer from ShockTop. It was reminiscent of McMenimins Ruby, with a more tart sweet after taste. It was the perfect compliment to a sunny summer day!

  19. 22 oz. Ninkasi Radiant with a buddy and my sexy neighbor on his stoop last night, passing it ’round. We were recording the vocals to our new funk tune, “Cruise Control.” Hey, what’s another layer? Need these tix so I can invite my neighbor! Please help me get one step closer to makin’ out. Thx.

  20. Just to make sure that I qualify for the contest, my last non-dream beer was a Black Butte Porter. Right from the bottle, which was right from the fridge, dark, bittersweet, and delicious. But I wish I could report that it had been something offbeat, like Tunisian Lรถwenbrรคu (well, maybe not that, it’s the worst beer in the world).

  21. I wish I had a cooler one to share, but the last beer I had was one of the Sessions’ Black shorties out the 12 pack sitting in my pantry. I did cool it down and it tasted just fine. It’s a great taste-to-cost ratio. I think I got paper under the cap.

  22. last night at work, a douche bag told me i was an awful server for not getting him water. water is self serve. so i went home and had a PBR. it wasn’t nearly strong enough to make me believe in the goodness of humankind again. i could use something….stronger.

  23. Just flew in from New York last night and had the first Oregon brew I’ve tasted in over 6 months. A nice, cool, crisp, refreshing Dechutes Mirror Pond. God how I have missed Oregon beer.

  24. I had a Widmer Summer Citra Blonde on Sunday while enjoying the afternoon sunshine. It was a perfect balance of citrus and hops and it was smooth and refreshing on a warm summer day.
