I’ve voted in Iowa for the last four years and I knew knew KNEW it would come through despite Republican attempts to disenfranchise students. The state was much more politically savvy than you coast bound kids think it would be – I’ll tell you, small farmers know their policy. Voting in Iowa is a wonderful event involving lots of eldery poll workers. “Voting was pretty much my favorite thing I’ve done all day,” says my friend Sarah, a registered Iowan, “It was so exciting and fun and empowering. I really love the nice, patient older women poll volunteers who smile at me.”

Sarah Shay Mirk reported on transportation, sex and gender issues, and politics at the Mercury from 2008-2013. They have gone on to make many things, including countless comics and several books.

One reply on “Iowa! I love you!”

  1. as an expat Iowan here in Oregon, I couldn’t agree more-Obama getting his start there and winning it this year was the cherry on top of last night’s awesomeness sundae
