MONDAY
FILM
Girls Town
An intriguing Sundance hit you probably haven’t heard of premiered nearly 30 years ago. Girls Town, led by Lili Taylor, Bruklin Harris, Anna Grace, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, follows high school seniors as they prep for the real world in New York City. According to Seattle’s Beacon Cinema, Girls Town is also “one of the first films of its kind to frankly address sexual violence as women experience it,” despite being directed by debut filmmaker Jim McKay. The coming-of-age story and frank portrayal of patriarchal culture hits a fever pitch thanks to an electrifying all-female soundtrack—honestly, I’d show up just for ’90s legends like Queen Latifah, PJ Harvey, and Salt-N-Pepa.
